''My body was getting very painful, my eyes were burning and stinging. My head was getting very heavy and all of my body was shivering,'' he said.

Dr Boeuf said Mr Singh was likely to have been bitten by a mosquito before coming to Australia, and his malaria symptoms were activated when sickness lowered his immune system.

Of the 400 people diagnosed with malaria in Australia each year, 40 per cent have been attributed to Plasmodium vivax, a federal Health Department spokesman said. Australian Medical Association state vice president Tony Bartone said it was difficult to diagnose patients with dormant malaria that broke out in Australia.
