The 51-year-old public relations executive, mother and Western Addition resident has launched a new program to turn decommissioned Muni buses into shower stalls, drive them to nonprofits that serve homeless people and hand over toiletries and towels.

It seems so simple and yet - like so many of the city's best ideas - took somebody who doesn't spend her days inside City Hall to come up with it.

She'd donated money and clothes to homeless charities and to panhandlers themselves, and had volunteered at Project Homeless Connect. But embarking on her new venture was "a complete 180," she said, since she's held a host of marketing and public relations jobs in the tech and arts sectors. Most recently, she worked at the arts and technology nonprofit Zero 1, but now she's devoted herself to the shower project full time.

Remarkably, there are only 16 showers stalls available around San Francisco for the 3,400 people who live on the city's streets. The stalls are at seven locations in the South of Market, Mission, Tenderloin and Bayview, but most have very limited hours and are only available on certain days of the week.

"When the economy went south, services were cut for all sorts of needs, and providing showers happened to be one of those," Sandoval said,[http://kathakalinews.com/wholesale-nfl-jerseys-cheap.html wholesale authentic nfl jerseys], adding she was inspired by the city's booming food truck scene. "If we can put gourmet food on wheels and take it anywhere, why not showers?"

Sandoval is calling her program Lava Mae. Lavame means "wash me" in Spanish, but she turned it into a girly-sounding name. ("Like Peggy Sue," she said with a laugh.)

She has obtained one decommissioned Muni bus from the with three more in the pipeline if the first bus - set to hit the streets in March - goes well. Usually, Muni buses taken out of rotation are given to charities or a national auctioneer to be sold, said spokesman .

Sandoval has also worked with the , which will hook her buses up with water at fire hydrants around the city free of charge.

The buses will not look like Muni buses. So people will actually want to get on them? "I didn't say that," she said with a laugh.

Instead, they'll be wrapped in blue and painted with a stream and bubbles to reflect the water theme. Each bus will come equipped with two hygiene units complete with a shower, sink, toilet, mirror, changing room and bench. Three Lava Mae staff members will work at the bus along with one volunteer social worker who can help connect homeless people with services beyond getting clean.

There will be no charge to use the portable showers, which means Lava Mae will operate completely on donations.

She expects the first year's budget to be $318,000, which will pay for three staff members (including herself, though she's donating her salary back to the program) and the retrofit of the first bus.

She's raised $58,000 so far in private donations, is applying for grants and has sunk some of her own family's money into it. Her husband, , is an attorney, and they have a 6-year-old daughter, Tamasen.

Bevan Dufty, the mayor's point man on homelessness, is a big fan of Lava Mae and will probably give some money from the Mayor's - a repository for private donations - to help get it started. Currently, the pot has $200,000 in it.
