But she did so much more. Her job? She built their tin mill. Dofasco had never made tin before.

She told Dofasco how to lay out the works, staff it, organize the shifts, set up the tables, hang lamps. When the mill was running, she became forelady, overseeing a team of women she hired herself.

While it was being constructed, literally around her, the mill was so cold Sally would keep warm on breaks by covering herself in straw from unpacked crates. Straw, tin, heart of a lion; could have been a movie.

Sally's tin mill was a huge success. The demand for Dofasco tin grew so fast they had to institute 24/7 shifts. Sally felt that because of their fingers and hands, women had better dexterity for turning delicate tin.

"She was very protective of her girls," says Suzanne.

"He said, 'I'm Bud Turnbull.' She said, 'You get the hell away from my girls,'" says Suzanne.

It took Bud two years to get Sally, with the fiery red hair, to warm to him.

At 29, after 10 amazing tin mill years, Sally married Bud, retired and became as remarkable a parent (three children: Judy, Jim and Suzanne) as she'd been a forelady. A mother "superior," after all.

"Our house was always full, with their friends partying, or with her volunteer friends, or women who came to have their hair done she hand a gift for that," says Suzanne, a retired teacher of the hearing impaired.

She remembers how one day her mother sat her down to tell her how proud she was of her.

And how proud was Suzanne of Sally? When Dofasco honoured the great founders of steel in a company publication 10 years ago, they neglected to acknowledge the role the women played.

It upset Sally, not for herself but for her "girls."

Suzanne got on it and Dofasco made it up with a nice spread titled 'Our Sally.'

But Sally was a pioneer who paved their way. Sally and Bud shared a birthday Oct. 4 and just this past Friday that shared occasion had to make room for one more: the birth of Suzanne's new granddaughter Emily Thomson, 8 pounds and 3 ounces.
