It converts the images by computer into a "virtual needle," then re-creates the sound. Through history, "many words have been uttered, but only a small fraction are captured. I think it is important to make it accessible," Haber said. Boyce's research into how plants change the environment. Most of his work focuses on what today's plants tell us about modern-day changes in the temperature and precipitation. But -- "for fun," he said -- the Stanford scientist studies plants' influences more than 100 million years ago -- for instance, how the water transpiration of ancient flowering plants increased rainfall and contributed to the creation of rainforests.  Lobell's use of data to investigate the David Lobell, 2013 MacArthur Fellow impact of climate change on global crop production and food security. In one influential recent paper, his Stanford research showed that hotter temperatures in Russia, China, Mexico and elsewhere have stunted the yields of corn and wheat, contributing to rising food prices.
