BEAVERCREEK Public Utilities Commission shares energy and gas company options with Beavercreek residents.

Jack Keegan of the Public Utilities Commission (PUCO) visited the Greene County Public Library s Beavercreek Branch to meet with residents who wanted to learn about their choices in energy and gas companies and to gain a better understanding of options, rates and the meaning of different power sources on June 25.

So, why are you being approached now with these choices? Because other suppliers now feel they can be competitive or beat your current suppliers, Keegan said.

Over the years the electrical utility industry has taken a drastic change and the PUCO wants to make sure everyone has been educated about their choices before jumping into a decision that might be right for your business or family.

The PUCO office works to help solve utility disputes; provide payment plan information; explain utility rules and regulations; provides information regarding PUCO public hearings and how to participate; provides tips on energy conservation; and to provide speakers for civic, consumer, religious and community organizations.

To help educate the state of Ohio, the PUCO has developed an Office of Retail Competition called the ORC. The mission of the ORC office is to improve awareness of the market-based utility service in Ohio.

Energy choice allows consumers to have a greater control of the cost of generation rates and natural gas. In the past, everyone was provided the same kind of electricity. You and neighbor would be charged the same for the amount of electricity and gas used. But, that is no longer true. Your neighbor could be getting his generation supplied by 100% wind production, while you may have decided to go with a more traditional supplier and based your decision more on the lowest price.

If you don t choose a new supplier, Dayton Power Light will still provide electricity and Vectren will still supply your gas. There is no time limit to switch, Keegan said.

Electricity can be confusing and finding a company can be even more confusing. But, PUCO has made the process easier. The Apples to Apples chart compare the company contact information, current offer and type of generation offered, current cost of kwh usage, compares contract terms and the offer details along with fees that are associated with early termination from the contract. The idea is to help with the comparison of all companies in one spot to clear up some of the confusion.

How do you know what you currently have? If you haven t signed a contract or verbally agreed to be switched to another electric company or gas company, more than likely you are still on Dayton Power Light Energy and Vectren. To be sure, check your bill. For electricity, you will only be contracting for the generation part of DP L service. On the back of your bill, next to the generation charge, the name of your current generation supplier will be listed. Vectren s bill is easier to understand and can easily be found on the front of the bill.

To further understand your energy bill, on the front of the monthly statement, on the bottom, the bill will include a price-to-compare section that will tell the current price you are paying for the generation cost.

Service will not be interrupted or service will not deteriorate because you switched generation companies.
