Key match-up: Jean Mbe vs. Karim Abdul. Mbe was quietly NU’s best player the whole season. And he needed to be considering Parks was just decent. There wasn’t a super improvement in his game this year; it was just that he had more touches. Mbe goes against an equally strong force down low in Karim Abdul. The Cameroonian, also was UST’s runaway best player this year. Coach Pido was hanging on his coattails for the most part of the season with some of his key players wounded. Whoever wins this match-up can determine who barges into the finals.

Sneaky key player on offense: John Sheriff (Pempengco!). With a smart, pass-first point guard, the Tigers’ core have been put back to their old “I don’t need to think of playmaking” mode and they somehow look similar compared to last year, when Fortuna was running the point.

DEFENSE

The NU Bulldogs was the runaway best defensive team in the second round as they only allowed their foes to drop 60.57 ppg. It’s obvious that these Bulldogs are bending their butts lower and moving their feet side-to-side faster. That’s the mark of a team that really wants to be a part of conversations until the end.

UST on the other hand, was a so-so defensive team in the second round. They allowed four opponents to score 65 or more on them. If they want to get a return ticket to the finals, they would have to play with more intensity on D.

Key defensive player: Bobby Ray Parks Jr. Being fully acclimated to the small forward/stretch four role this season, Parks Jr. has had to guard threes and fours all season long. He has his work cut out for him against Ferrer and Mariano.

Sneaky key player on D: of course it’s Kevin Ferrer. We all know that he’ll be on BRPJ’s grill so much that it’s possible that they may exchange faces. Oh you don’t want that to happen Ray Ray!

That may have gone for your face like a bouncing American football. But for fans and analysts that put Yokozuna-weight on UST’s experience and NU’s lack thereof; that prediction should come from right field (if there’s such a thing). If you were bored enough to listen to our preseason predictions episode on SLAMRadioPh, you would know that I said “I’m picking UST to be a LOCK at number one after the eliminations.” And you know what happened. Their bench looked like a charity ward with all the injured players but they were able to survive that. Now that their core is back, I firmly believe that they will go into foxhole mode and outwit the Bulldogs.
