+Rep. Keith Ellison, one of the most outspoken progressives in the House, said even the vote to fund WIC was an easy one for him to oppose.

There s now no clear plan for an end game. As one Republican lawmaker told  last week, We re not in a situation that has been planned out and war-gamed and plotted.

Steve Israel. The sequester was damaging enough, but a shutdown of the entire government of the United States of America is a completely different matter. We re not interested in continuing a game.
+The face-off will continue this week with the added pressure of a deadline for hitting the debt ceiling on Oct. 17. House Speaker John Boehner said on ABC  that the House doesn t have enough votes to pass clean continuing resolution despite the fact that more than 20 Republican members have signaled they d vote for one with House Democrats should the bill ever come to the floor.

+President Obama blasted irresponsible Republicans for holding the country hostage over an ideological battle, and remained steadfast in his refusal to negotiate over the debt ceiling on Tuesday.

+Houston GM Daryl Morey deserves a round of applause from Rockets fans for not only convincing superstar center Dwight Howard to come to town, but also for maintaining a solid base of talent around him. Even though Morey has hit it out of the park the last few summers - first acquiring shooting guard James Harden from the Thunder in the summer of 2012 and signing Howard this past offseason - there are still a few unanswered questions remaining for the team.
+Howard wants to be featured on offense, but so far in his career hasn't shown much willingness to adapt to a coach's scheme that isn't built around him. The Rockets were clearly Harden's team last year, and he was top-15 in the league in both minutes played and usage rate (a stat that shows the percentage of offensive possessions used by a player while he's on the floor, via&nbsp;).
+Harden is not considered a selfish player, averaging 5.8 assists a game last season, but he likes to have the ball in his hands and often initiates the offense. Last year, the Rockets had one of the highest-scoring, fastest teams in the NBA, while Howard has always loved operating in the post. If Howard has difficulty assimilating with Harden, this offense could stall at times as both players try to figure out how best to work with each other.

+Jeremy Lin started at point guard last year and had a decent season, scoring 13.4 points a game to go with 6.1 assists, but he shot only 33.9 percent from outside. Patrick Beverley, the second-year point guard who infamously helped cause Russell Westbrook's knee injury in the 2013 playoffs, plays aggressive defense and shot three-pointers at a 37.5 clip last season. If Lin struggles, Beverley will be prepared to play more minutes and take over the starting position if necessary.
+The other main position battle for the Rockets this preseason will be at starting power forward, assuming it's not Asik or Howard. Two second-year guys, Donatas Motiejunas and Terrence Jones, will duke it out to see who starts. In one preseason game so far, both players got about the same amount of minutes, points and rebounds. The starting position will most likely go to the the player who is most able to play off of Howard in the front court and as of now, it's unclear if it will be Motiejunas or Jones.
+Chandler Parsons, the incumbent starting small forward, really came on strong last season. He filled out the stat sheet, played hard defense and nailed 38.5 percent of his three-pointers. He is a solid role player who took huge leap from year-one to year-two, and could see his role on offense expand this year again as there should be plenty of looks from outside available as defenses collapse on Harden and Howard. Parson's backup, Omri Casspi, is a career 35.3 percent shooter from downtown and should also help space the floor.
+Ronnie Brewer, an effective wing defender, was brought in this summer by Morey along with 39-year-old center Marcus Camby. They round out the bench with point guard Aaron Brooks, who looks to reignite his career after following his 19.1 points per game in 2010 with a few sub-par seasons. If he can hit threes at his career rate of 36.4 percent,[http://mrevonine.com/activity/p/62052/ Robert Griffin III Full Transcript- 10-9], he should be able to find some minutes. The same goes for Francisco Garcia, a backup two-guard who hit 38.6 percent of his threes last year.
+Houston ranged from decent to terrible on defense last year, something they can change with Howard now in the middle. Beverley will get more consistent minutes at the point and should contribute to an improved perimeter defense that will get strong play from Parsons and Brewer, as well. Expect Houston to vastly improve on the 102.7 points per game they gave up last season, good for second-worst in the league. With the talent the Rockets now have, they may vault into the top-half of NBA defenses this year.
+Houston may have had two of the best back-to-back summers in recent memory, but they are still competing for a top-spot in a loaded conference. +In a nutshell again, here are these Four Factors and briefly what they mean:
+eFG% = Efficiency Field Goal percentage. We ve covered this before. It is defined as (FG + 0.5 * 3P) / FGA. So it s pretty darn intuitive that it s just field goal percentage but compensating extra for 3 s? Good.
+FTR = Free Throw Rate. Again, we ve got a simple formula here: FTA/FGA. So this defines how often teams get those fun freebies known as free throws in basketball lingo. They re a bonus, so it s helpful to get them and limit them.
+TOR = Turnover Rate. So this is the trickiest of all of these formulas: TO / Possessions. OK, that s not actually that completed. But possessions are the new wave of basketball analysis. It places all stats in pace-context; something especially helpful for turnovers.
+ORR = Offensive Rebound Rate. The formula: OR / (OR + DR). It is the percentage of offensive rebounds a team captures out of all of their own missed shots leading to rebound opportunities. Again, this makes sense as to why it s helpful in basketball.
+So what do we see here with the Cavs before and after Anderson Varejao? Offensive improvement, as we saw before, and now to the tune of +5.7 more points scored per 100 possessions. But why again has this happened?
+Notably, on the offensive end, efg% is up by 1.7%, FTR is up by 0.6%, TOR is down by 3.3% and ORR is down by 5.8%. The rebounding drop is the only negative here, as one might expect when losing one of the more skilled rebounders in the NBA. Then, the turnover rate drop is then the most relatively significant. In comparison to league average, the Cavs have improved from one of the worst in the league to slightly better than mediocre.
+Looking at the season stats for the team, it appears that newcomers Wayne Ellington and Marreese Speights have helped with their low turnover rates. +Committing fewer turnovers is definitely a positive for offensive improvement. And certainly the recent trade and Kyrie Irving s improvements appear to be big factors here. It s just neat now to explain one of the bigger reasons behind Cleveland s improved offensive efficiency a la the Thunder even without Andy Varejao.

Lots and lots of people have shared that teams are waiting on a potential Josh Smith deal before any other dominoes fall into place. That could prevent the Cavs from swinging any deal. But we ll share how the next 24 hours shape up.
+And then, conversely, what do I want to happen? I m not even sure just yet. I ve been a big fan of Speights, but again, he s not a huge piece for this iteration of the Cavaliers whenever they re good. Best-case scenario, he s an scoring/rebounding sixth man, as he is now. But more likely, he ll struggle to find minutes on a contending team, as was the case with Memphis. This has been a fun run, but if the Cavs can find another home for him that nets back better assets, I d probably be on board.
+As for Gibson and Walton, I doubt any team will bite on them. I m perfectly fine with Cleveland simply eating those deals and maintaining future flexibility. +This seems intuitive: The Cavs are better when Kyrie is playing great. So how great does he need to be? When he has played this season, the team is 14-28. They are just 2-9 otherwise. In the 28 losses, Kyrie has a fairly mediocre 47.3% efficiency field goal percentage. In those 14 wins, Kyrie has a nearly implausible 60.3% efg. He s shooting 42.5% on the season! Well, yes, that s true. But he s also shooting 47.0% from threes in his last 20 games. There might not be a hotter shooter per attempt in the NBA.
+It has been well-documented that Kyrie Irving is ambidextrous. But this season, it appears he s having more success shooting from the left-side. Looking at twos on the left compared to right, it is 45.5% to 35.8%. Looking at threes on the left compared to the right, it is 48.5% to 42.6%. Those are some dramatic improvements. He succeeded a bit better on the right-hand side in his rookie year so these could just be some fluky numbers. But they re still fun to consider.

+The film is based on a book by Liberace's jilted plaything Thorson, so sympathy is with him. +Douglas oozes lechery, but lacks the necessary insecurities to make his Liberace interesting. Damon, as the wide-eyed Thorson who gets in with "these San Francisco fellas", is better, and his character has a more interesting arc. Rob Lowe adds some fun by showing up to vamp as a sleazy 1970s plastic surgeon.
+It all feels like a story we've seen before, especially in the classic Sunset Boulevard with its ageing diva and ingenue. It may have been better to have focused on Liberace and his protective Jewish manager Seymour Heller (a delightful Dan Aykroyd).
+The film shrinks from exploring Liberace's place in queer culture, and that is a shame. Despite being outlandishly fey, Liberace publicly denied his homosexuality to his death. That denial has far more interest as a character study than a film about another flaming, lustful queen. But whenever the opportunity to discuss this comes up - as in the scene when Thorson complains to Liberace that they never go anywhere outside - it dissolves into another lovers' quarrel.
+The film opened the recent Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. But Behind the Candelabra already feels a bit dated as gay cinema, and Douglas' Liberace feels more like a stereotypical leftover from La Cage aux Folles. Maybe it would have been better if Soderbergh had got his original Hollywood budget, maybe not.
+Behind the Candelabra is a nice showcase for two heterosexual Hollywood studs to prove they are daring actors. But it's a flat epilogue to a respected director's career.

Former Rookie of the Year guard Tyreke Evans, All-Star point Jrue Holiday and three-point marksman Anthony Morrow were all brought in and will contribute to an improved lineup.
+The real quagmire Pelicans coach Monty Williams faces this season will be finding enough minutes and touches for everyone in a loaded back court.
+The starting guards will be Jrue Holiday at point and Eric Gordon at the two. This back court features two solid scorers,[http://817726.47245.20la.com.cn/plus/view.php?aid=32851 WATCH- Cruz blames Obama for hecklers   — MSNBC], but neither is above average at his position shooting threes and both prefer to control the ball on offense. Gordon has been hurt, so they haven't had much opportunity to become acquainted with each other on the court.

This allows Evans to play his natural position of shooting guard, with small forward Al-Farouq Aminu retaining his starting spot from a year ago. Aminu is a solid defender and one of the best rebounding small forwards in the NBA. He's a classic "glue-guy" who plays to his strengths. Evans' willingness to come off the bench allows Williams to spread his back court talent more evenly throughout his playing rotation. Besides, doesn't Evans immediately become one of the preseason favorites for Sixth Man of the Year?
+Davis, the No.1 overall pick in 2012, will be a force in the paint.&nbsp; to his lanky frame, and has been tearing up the preseason so far, averaging over 25 points a game and blocking over two shots. It's preseason basketball, so he may be seeing increased reps against bench players, but the effort he put in this past summer is looking like it will pay off in the regular season. Davis is also pretty good on the glass and shoots a high percentage. He was a solid contributor his rookie year, and Pelicans fans can expect him to be a consistent team-leader as the season progresses.

Davis could potentially slide over to the five in certain lineups, but Smith and Steimsma should take up the bulk of the minutes down low.

Look for Anderson to be deadly from the perimeter while he's on the floor, forcing opposing defenses to choose between collapsing on the guards' penetration or keeping a defender in his face. Either way, defenses will have their hands full when Anderson is on the court spacing the floor.
+Austin Rivers had a disappointing rookie season, shooting poorly from all over the court. If he doesn't improve his broken shot, he'll most likely be squeezed out entirely of one of the most talented back courts in the league. Backup point guard Brian Roberts is more efficient than Rivers, and swingman Anthony Morrow brings a 42.4 percent career shooting percentage from outside. It appears Rivers' leash will be short this year, considering the number of more efficient options Williams has on his bench.
+The defense of this Pelicans squad should be improved from last season for a few reasons. Davis is healthy and his added weight should allow him to maintain better positioning in the post. He still has his huge wingspan and athleticism, so he's poised to be a force in the paint again.
+Last year's starting point guard, Greivis Vasquez, is a pretty poor defender. Holiday and a healthy Gordon are much more athletic and capable defensively. Aminu is a rock-solid defender on the wing. The weakest link in the starting lineup is Smith, but the versatility and explosiveness of Davis should help mask Smith's deficiencies. Davis' reputation as a shot-blocker and overall defensive presence should help make this defense respectable by the end of the season.

+Last month, Brown signed SB105, a bill allowing the state to spend $315 million this fiscal year to house thousands of inmates in private prisons and county jails unless the lower court postpones its deadline for reducing the prison population.

+Both proposals would replace a previous ruling that said the state can safely release more than 4,000 inmates by increasing good-behavior credits. The ruling also calls for early releases for elderly and medically incapacitated inmates and sending more inmates to firefighting camps and new facilities.
+The lower court had threatened to cite Brown for contempt if he did not comply, but last month the judges ordered the state to negotiate with inmates' attorneys toward a possible compromise.
+In 2011, Supreme Court justices ruled that the lower court panel had the authority to order California to reduce inmate overcrowding as the key condition for improving conditions.

+California's state prison population already has been reduced by more than 46,000 inmates since 2006 to meet the federal court mandates. The judges have ordered that the population in the state's 33 adult prisons be reduced to 137.5 percent of design capacity or 110,000 inmates by the end of this year.
+In arguing against the inmate-reduction order, the Brown administration said the state would have to release serious and violent offenders. The governor also argued in court filings that the lower court has overstepped its authority under federal law.
+Brown remained combative even after the lower court gave the state a one month reprieve from its year-end deadline for releasing prisoners, to allow time for the negotiations. Brown immediately filed a supplemental appeal with the Supreme Court objecting that the lower court simultaneously blocked the state from contracting to send more inmates to private prisons in other states.
+Brown argues that the population cap is no longer needed because prison health care has improved significantly. He also contends that the state lacks lower-risk offenders who could safely be released early because most of those are already being sentenced to county jails instead of state prisons.</html>

+It's not surprising that attention is being focused on safety because a huge number of car buyers want to drive with their pets, said Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst with Edmunds.com. A pet that isn't harnessed in a car is really dangerous. That animal propels through a car like a missile.
+Subaru, which markets its cars to pet owners, plans to feature the winning safety harness in a newsletter that goes out to 5 million people and to offer it for sale in its gear catalog, said Michael McHale, director of communications for the car company.
