+So what do we make of this? Is Alex Smith terrible at handling the blitz in the past? I sat down (not literally) with Andrew Carroll to talk more about this. He writes:
+This says Smith's PFR rating against the blitz last season was a +7.4:<br>
+Since Smith did not play as many snaps as other quarterbacks in the league, that number cannot really be compared to other quarterbacks without turning it into a grade per snap type number. Given he faced only 90 snaps with a blitz,[http://xianguoyoupin.com/home.php?mod=space&uid=83451 ], a +7.4 is pretty good. For example, Rodgers graded out a +13.4, but was blitzed 178 snaps. Had Smith faced 180 snaps, his grade would have (theoretically) been +14.8 -- a bit better than Rodgers.
+<br> I do know that Smith's passer rating was slightly worse than Brady's against the blitz (by like 2 points, 128 to 126), but Smith's Y/A was higher. At 8.6, that had to be one of the highest in the league last season. Rodger's was 8.0, Brady's 8.4

Of course, Kaep made up for that discrepancy in other ways.

+So what made Smith so successful against the blitz San Fransico? Chris Brown from Smart Football :
+Harbaugh has also changed the entire theory behind how Smith and his offense approach the blitz, and this is where Smith's greatest improvement has come. That's because Harbaugh eliminated "sight adjustments" from the . Indeed, this change has been so successful that, according to , Smith's completion percentage, quarterback rating, average yards per attempt, and touchdown-to-interception ratio against blitzes have all been much better than Smith's historical averages, but also better than his performance on all other downs.
+A "sight adjustment" by a receiver refers to the concept that, if a defense blitzes, the quarterback and receiver must both on the fly and after the snap recognize it and adjust routes accordingly. For example, if the receiver's original assignment was to run, say, 12 yards upfield before breaking outside, when he saw a blitz he might instead run five yards upfield and then break inside on a quick slant, presumably away from a man-to-man defender or to a spot left open by the blitzers. The theory behind this is sound: You simply must have answers against the blitz, and you need receivers to break off their routes to give the quarterback someplace to quickly pass the ball. If they don't blitz, however, you want to throw downfield (or so you think). Again, this is all great in theory.
+Here's the problem: Players have to make sight adjustments after the snap, in the cognitive mist of a few seconds of action. The quarterback is in a decent spot to read the defense's intentions to the extent that he can identify the likely blitzers and . Receivers, on the other hand, are aligned to the perimeter and can't see more than a few players in front of them. They also happen to be sprinting once the ball is put in play. This is not to say that sight adjustments can't work,[http://fastmoney.stock-swing-trading.com/blogs/viewstory/488043 The Crew is a Racing RPG for the Open Road], but they're certainly difficult to execute, and when they go wrong terrible things happen: Receivers run hot routes they shouldn't, or don't run them when they should; passes go sailing to empty patches of green; interceptions are frequent.

+So the 49ers ditched sight adjustments. But they still need an answer for the blitz, right? Harbaugh has one. If you want your team to throw the ball downfield, you must keep extra players (two running backs, a running back and a tight end, etc.) in  to buy time for your receivers to get open. Coaches resist this because defenses can force unfavorable situations, like when your running back must block a blitzing defender while three linemen block no one on the other side of the field. But these are necessary trade-offs; the advantage to the offense should be that the three or so receivers who do release in the route should have time to beat the coverage. And, if the defense rushes only four, then the running backs or tight ends can leak into passing routes a technique known as the . Remember, this doesn't mean the defense cannot still blitz more than the offense can block they always can but by keeping extra blockers, teams protect their quarterbacks from the inside to the outside. They force the extra rushers to come from the outside and give receivers time to get open.
+But what if you aren't going to block with seven or eight people? The quarterback still needs an anti-blitz option or two, and these are known as "hot" routes. The difference between Harbaugh's "hot routes" and the sight adjustment is that he builds them into the receivers' regular routes. In short, every play has at least one hot route a quick out, shallow cross, or slant so if Alex Smith sees a blitz, no complex ballet of synchronized adjustments is necessary; he just looks for a different receiver. Instead of reading deep to medium to short on a passing play that was not blitzed, he might look deep to hot, or even hot to hot (as shown in the video above), when facing a blitz. There is a risk that the built-in hot routes won't necessarily attack the right area for a given blitz and its attendant coverage, but that was an equal risk with sight adjustments. +This may seem like a small tweak, and maybe even a step backward, but I assure you it is not. As defenses get more complex, the answer isn't always to get more complex on offense; sometimes, it's the opposite. By making the game easier, Harbaugh has turned Smith into one of the league leaders in interceptions per pass attempt.
+Hope you made it through that. If you did, you just read some very good information about Smith and how was able to handle the blitz . This is an area of concern for me and an area for you and I to watch. Will this hot read concept be in the play book be incorporated into Andy Reid's offense? It certainly was not on display. There was no compensation in terms of WR play as you can see above and there was little to no game planning for it when it started to get out of hand. Yes, it is pre-season and Andy may very well wanted to test this offensive line; however, there is only so much an offensive line can contain when the pressure is coming from everywhere, including the corner blitz. There needs to be intense practice this week and beyond on handling the blitz and hot reads.

+When looking at this situation after a pre-season game, there are a few ways to look at it:
+) The Chiefs should have been better in this area. Disappointing that they weren't. Sign of things to come.
+) The Chiefs lack that talent on the offensive line to play better. Over-rated prospects and players. Alex Smith is too indecisive as well.
+) These are areas the 49ers exposed for the Chiefs. Allow to be corrected with a week or more of practice with no penalty. Would have been exposed in the regular season, when it counts otherwise.
+Personally, I take the 3rd. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. There were no major injuries this game (thank God Alex was not). The Niners threw every blitz you can think of in this game: stunts, corner blitzes, safety blitzes, linebacker blitzes. We got destroyed by all of them. Had we played the  or the , it would be less likely we'd be tested as thoroughly. The Chiefs chose a tough pre-season schedule (yes, teams get to pick their pre-season opponents) for a reason. Andy Reid rightly chose to play the starters through intense blitzing to test them. We got these areas exposed unlike other teams that sit their starters. Andy chose to play a banged up Eric Fisher to continue to get this experience now rather than later.
+Don't take it the wrong way either. Eric Fisher, along with other members of our offesnive line, has displayed some nice skills too. Check out this great block he did to help covert a key 4th down in the game.
+They say youth on the offensive line is both a blessing and curse. Well, we have the  and a new QB who is behind it. A plethora of different receivers who have no chemistry with hot reads or timing with Alex Smith-- who was playing side by side a rookie RB with little experience pass blocking. The only direction to go from here is up. Thank you Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers for giving us everything you got and showing us how we can get even better. We get real film to improve on and will get another blitz heavy defense in Pittsburgh next week to prove ourselves.

+Dealing with disconnect
+Natalie Donovan, a cognitive therapist at , said for those who suffer from a brain injury, feeling isolated and frustrated, the way Smith felt during his initial recovery, is common. That’s why Smith and Donovan, as well as a few other Lawrence residents, decided in January it was time to start a support group in Lawrence to help people connect and cope with brain injuries.
+“It helps them in going through a new normal and figuring out their place after the injury,[http://ljkstudio.com/wiki/index.php/%EC%82%AC%EC%9A%A9%EC%9E%90:Ltyobzvduuc#Inside_Scoop_around_the_world Inside Scoop around the world],” Donovan said. “Too often families are in survival mode and it’s hard to reach out to people (and ask for help) when you’re just surviving.”
+The Lawrence Brain Injury Support Group meets once a month and is meant for both the person who suffers from the injury and their caregivers. The way people got their injuries and the extent to which they're affected vary from person to person.
+Some of the people who attend the support group have a brain injury from multiple concussions or from falling and hitting their heads. Others were in traumatic accidents; one man who attends was hit by a train.
+Sharron Witters, one of the founders of the group, became a caregiver for her husband Lynn eight years ago. He had a heart attack and the lack of oxygen to his brain caused damage. She said after the injury, she had trouble networking and finding people who could relate to her situation or give her advice.
+“I was so desperate for other people to talk to, and there was really no way for me to access other caregivers,” Witters said.
+Witters and her husband began attending support groups in places like Kansas City or Paola, and Witters started to realize how therapeutic it was to share her frustrations and joys with others who were going through the same thing.
+“We all have vastly different stories and yet it’s just wonderful to be able to have this open communication from all walks of life, all different stories, and we all share that common bond … there are so many similarities and it’s so fascinating,” Witters said.
+At the Lawrence support group, there are sometimes speakers and typically the meetings all start with socializing and as one large group. +Answer: City projects are supervised by Petaluma engineers, while the on-ramp work is overseen by Caltrans. Spokesman Allyn Amask was able to tell us that no observable work took place at the on-ramp for several months due to a required settling period for an embankment and retaining wall.
+When contractors could report that no movement was observed on the retaining wall, construction work resumed in mid-June. The intersection is scheduled to be done in mid-2014, but could be finished earlier if good weather days continue, Amask says.

+Answer: Mark is right to say that signals on the overpass are overseen by Caltrans. Local agencies are doing what they can to ease the problem and have plans in place to get things running smoothly again once the 101 work is done.
+Petaluma City Engineer Curtis Bates said the city has been working with Caltrans staff to figure out how to improve traffic flow while the interchange is under construction.

+"I'm not even sure we'll find one," Denis said, as he pointed me in the direction of Valladolid's Mercado Municipal. "They don't have them every day."
+ has run the Casa Hamaca bed-and-breakfast for several years on Parque San Juan, a pretty little square four blocks from Valladolid's main plaza. He looks like a mild-mannered tourist from the Midwest, but don't try to get between him and local Maya customs. His workers had just finished construction on new public bathrooms for the inn, and a celebration was in order.
+Nothing but a traditional cabeza de vaca would do for the required tacos.
+Though I've visited Valladolid five times in as many years, I'd somehow managed to miss both Casa Hamaca and the mercado on previous trips. You might think the town's central market and a great bed-and-breakfast would be top of the order, but I always find more to do than I have time for. That's not what I expected on my first trip - I was just looking for somewhere to stay close to Chichen Itza at the time. What I found was a handsome colonial city of an easily digestible size with a trove of 19th century buildings, a strong Maya presence and some of Mexico's most important history.
+Colonial past
+Valladolid was one of the first Spanish strongholds for  the Younger, who invaded the Yucatan in 1540, eventually finishing the job his father started 13 years earlier. The War of the Castes erupted here in 1847 when Maya deserters from the Mexican army revolted, leading to the longest and most destructive war Mexico has ever seen.
+In 1910, local merchants, landowners, artisans and Maya leaders signed the Dzelkoop Plan, starting a rebellion against military dictator 's puppet government in Yucatan. That early uprising is considered La Chispa, or "the Spark," that ignited the Mexican Revolution. The martyrs of La Chispa are buried in Valladolid's pretty Parque Las Heroes on the spot where they were executed by firing squad.
+Valladolid's primary tourist attraction until recent years was nearby Dzitnup, one of the Yucatan's most-photographed cenotes - freshwater sinkholes that open to the underground rivers coursing below the surface of the flat limestone shelf that forms the Yucatan peninsula. Cenote Dzitnup is beautiful, with its glassy, deep-blue water in an underground cave, but I found it humid, cramped and crowded. I was more eager to leave than I had been to enter.
+After that experience, I almost didn't visit Cenote Zaci, right in the middle of town. Once I did, though, I came back day after day for a break from the heat and city bustle. The stalactites, hanging vines and a shrine to the Virgin of Guadalupe carved into rock might have Indiana Jones reaching for his bullwhip, but the cave's roof is half open to the sky, shedding light and air on the wide,[http://www.lmecato.com/themes/wiki/index.php?title=User:Ljgpbmovnpl#Medium_needs_to_figure_out_what_it_wants_to_be_when_it_grows Medium needs to figure out what it wants to be when it grows], easily navigable stone stairway descending to the water. I'm content to sit on the edge and dangle my feet in the cool, clear water, as was my husband when I brought him on a later trip. But my daughter and her friend, who accompanied me a couple of years ago, were in the water with the locals before I reached the last step.
+Crafts and history
+I usually spend a couple of hours each afternoon lazing in Valladolid's main plaza, a haven of shade trees, food carts and vendors who entice children with bouquets of floating balloons and tourists with local crafts. The statue in the center of the fountain departs from the usual bronze monuments, instead depicting a full-color mestiza, a woman of the fusion of the Maya and Spanish cultures, in traditional Maya dress.
+I'm not much of a shopper, but Valladolid blooms with artisans, and I enjoy browsing the square, the Mercado de Artesanias half a block away, to marvel at what people can create with simple tools. Being in the center of cattle country, this is a great place to find inexpensive, locally made huaraches, bags, belts and other leather goods. Some of the hand-tooled saddles I've seen inspire fantasies of moving to a place where planning codes don't prohibit horses in suburban backyards.
+Embroidered dresses are probably the town's main handicraft, and Maya women used to hang their wares along one side of the plaza, creating a wall of brilliantly colored flowers. Since the square was renovated in 2009 - wisely retaining the lush shade trees and repainting the wrought-iron benches and S-shaped confidenciales, or lovers' seats, while repaving all the walkways - the ladies have moved across the street to the Bazar Municipal.
+Upscale shops on and near the square also honor Valladolid's crafts and history. Yalat sells unique folk art from throughout Mexico,[http://www.skygy.com/bbs/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=8209590 Tech women find opportunities in Girl Geek Dinners], emphasizing Yucatecan products; Coqui Coqui (the first of hot Argentine model 's Mexican ventures) captures scents of the Yucatan in perfumes made of agave, vanilla, coconut, plumeria, citrus and tropical woods; Dutzi Designs is a co-op workshop selling burlap and raffia bags of every description, handmade by local Maya men and women.
+I found the Calzada de los Frailes ("Walkway of the Friars"), a.k.a. Calle 41A, on my second trip. The planter-lined cobblestone street cuts diagonally through the traditional grid from downtown to the 16th century Franciscan monastery of San Bernardino de Siena. When I bring companions to Valladolid, I always take them at dusk, when it's quiet and you're walking toward the setting sun. The last rays of light give the pastel colors of the restored colonial homes an otherworldly glow and set fire to bougainvillea cascading over the walls.
+Expanding horizons
+Determined to expand my horizons on my recent trip, I gave up my usual berth at the  on the square, with its early 17th century ambiance and wonderful Yucatecan restaurant in an achingly romantic courtyard. Casa Hamaca was every bit as endearing while being a completely different experience.
+Denis Larsen's colonial house in a jungle-like native garden (where he offers massage, body work and shamanic cleansings in a traditional Maya palapa) has just eight large rooms, each with its own theme and every comfort you could ask for, unless you're addicted to TV. A well-traveled North Dakota native with a long history with Valladolid and a serious student of Maya culture, Denis generously offered to escort me to some places I hadn't seen yet, but first he sent me to Casa de los Venados.
+The recently opened house museum had been sitting inconspicuously less than a block from the main square before opening its private collection of Mexican folk art to the public, showcasing artwork that John and  amassed over decades of travel. Every type of folk art I've seen in museums is on display in their renovated 18,000-square-foot home, which itself is a work of art. Miniatures, ceramics, paintings, furniture, Day of the Dead skeletons and trees of life are arranged throughout the house, giving new meaning to the term living museum.
+Denis took me to the Mayapan distillery on the north edge of town, which produces the blue agave spirit that can legally be called Tequila only if made in Jalisco state and a few other regions. The best part is touring the agave fields and the distillery's harvesting, cooking, crushing (by a horse pulling a 1-ton stone around a circular molienda, or grinder), fermenting and distilling facilities. But the blanco, reposado and a?ejo (aged) shots of, ahem, Mayapan, are pretty fine too.
+Cow's head tacos

After feasting on pibihuaches - chicken tucked into a cornmeal roll with a mysterious, mouth-watering sauce - he had a few words with some of the butchers, and the third one came up with the prize. We trundled the plastic-wrapped cabeza de vaca, secure in Denis' lap, back to the inn.
+His men wrapped the head in banana leaves and got it onto a fire built in a hole in the ground in time to finish cooking before my departure. I'm not much of a meat-eater, but it was clear I'd have to eat a taco, surrounded by expectant smiles.
+I took a bite and started chewing, trying to work around the fat and gristle, and found myself returning their smiles. Not because I liked the taco, but because these guys so loved their traditions and wanted me to be a part of it. Valladolid's capacity for change while adhering to tradition, I realized, is what keeps me coming back. It just took one unexpected taco to make the point.

+ Social Security is not free moneyI am a 72-year-old senior citizen whose only income is a small Social Security check. I have a hard time trying to meet expenses and pay for medications. I raised a family of seven children, three grandchildren. I also paid income tax and Social Security taxes.

I also heard that the Kansas Department of Revenue s Division of Vehicles is planning to open an office in Derby.
+I think that if the small towns in other counties can get you in and out in a few minutes, someone should take a look at how they do it and try to replicate it in Wichita. Our office is larger and has more employees and still can t get the job done. Maybe the state should open more than one new office in another part of the county. Employees might need some additional training to learn to do the job more quickly.
+With the number of people in Sedgwick County, the state really needs to correct the problem or not allow the other counties to charge extra money.

+Debate rationallyClimate change is a critically important issue that should be debated in a rational manner.
+Each side of the controversy could select representatives to include major aspects of their side and present their arguments and counterarguments in a panel discussion calm, deliberate discussion instead of street protests and slick propaganda. An independent instant fact-check panel could examine each assertion and decide its merits based on actual, verifiable data. It seems a reasonable alternative to demagoguery.
+This could also be utilized in the abortion controversy. A panel including both sides could debate calmly, factually when the fetus acquires rights that supersede its mother s, and when the government should become involved.
+Neither of those two rational discussions will ever take place, of course, because the profit motive and religious sanctimony are involved, and those two implacable forces are not concerned with justice, morality or rational debate.
