SCOTT:&nbsp;That was the president earlier this month trying to convince Americans his administration is doing all it can to be transparent in regard to the NSA collection of data. This week, a 2011 declassified report was released. It shows that the agency scooped up as many as 56,000 e-mails and other communications from Americans with no connection to terrorism. The report also included the opinions from the then chief judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance court. Judge John Bates writing, "For the first time, the government has now advised the court that the volume and nature of the information it has been collecting is fundamentally different from what the court had been led to believe."

Media reaction to all of the new details about the NSA's spying has been mixed. Although some in the press are beginning to turn up the heat. Questioning what the president and his administration are telling us. Jeff Jarvis at The Guardian writes -- "The punch line of the Snowden affair, when we can't trust what government tells us we come to trust those who government doesn't trust. Thus we no longer necessarily care what the official line is. And who delivers it. And when that happens, access, the currency of the beltway becomes worthless. Ah, the irony."

So, Jim, this report was out. It was prepared, I should say, before the president made those comments and before the president made some changes to the way the NSA operates.

SCOTT:&nbsp;So, should we trust everything now .

PINKERTON:&nbsp;The old joke, we are going to hear from the government to help you - protect you, it's - it's - look, Peggy Noonan wrote a terrific column on Friday, in which she said that the net result of all this is to turn Americans into, quote, solemnly paranoid in terms of this - fatalism -- no, I think they might be angry - angry as well. But look, this -- if I were the president I would just stop making statements that seem to be undercut by his own actions a week or two later.

SCOTT:&nbsp;What about the mainstream media coverage? It seems to have sort of -- dismissed this scandal, Judy?

JUDY MILLER, WRITER FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: I don't think it did. I think The Wall Street Journal and "The New York Times" stories on the NSA ruling that -- you know, the 2011 ruling that we were just talking about, really raises some profound questions about whether or not these are just kind of accidental whoopses in the system or there was a policy, which was unconstitutional. I don't -- I don't think that that means -- I think that indicates the media are finally taking this story very seriously. And that the -- trust me is being replaced by the - trust, but verified mantra of President Reagan. The media should be upset.

SCOTT:&nbsp;And Rick, we have been told that this is all supervised by the FISA court, Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court. But the chief judge at the time said hey, they were pulling the wool over our eyes here.

You will notice that the U.S. media is really beginning to say that this is about the U.S. government or our government. They are really not fingering Obama on this. However, there is a piece in the Atlantic this week by Philip Bump and he points out that President Obama's independent review board is not independent at all. And I think what we are seeing week is a real unraveling where the media are only beginning to say this is Obama's fault,[http://www.wzntj.com/home.php?mod=space&uid=90338 ], not just the U.S. government or the government.

SCOTT:&nbsp;And then there was sort of a side media story this week. Glenn Greenwald, the reporter who along with Edward Snowden, broke the story of the NSA surveillance. His partner, guy named David Miranda, was detained by British officials for nine hours on a -- terrorism charge of some sort. And some of his personal property was seized. Any reaction from the media?

KIRSTEN POWERS, DAILY BEAST COLUMNIST USA TODAY CONTRIBUTOR: Well, I mean, I think that there's everybody - pretty much was horrified by this. I don't think Obama has the media on his side on this issue, particularly because they've targeted the media, so that worked against them from the beginning. But the Glenn Greenwald thing was completely outrageous, because he was held for nine hours, which under the law, in which they were holding him, you can hold somebody up to nine hours. Now, we can quibble about whether or not that was the proper vehicle of law to hold him under, but he was acting as Glenn Greenwald's mule is what the British government alleged and that argument wasn't really made or heard well here in the United States.

HR were chosen from the first half of the season, while all of the other stats were chosen from the entire 2012 season because those were the only stats available to me. At the time this was created, there were about 15 minutes until derby time. I decided that these weights had to do, there was no time for tinkering, and I moved on.

I then proceeded to take down statistics for the actual Home Run Derby. After rising for decades, total vehicle use in the U.S. ― the collective miles people drive ― peaked in August 2007. It then dropped sharply during the Great Recession and has largely plateaued since, even though the economy is recovering and the population growing. Even more telling, the average miles drivers individually rack up peaked in July 2004 at just over 900 per month, said a study by  economists  and David Pace. By July of last year, that had fallen to 820 miles per month, down about 9 percent. Per capita automobile use is now back at the same levels as in the late 1990s.

Until the mid-1990s, driving levels largely tracked economic growth, according to Pickrell and Pace, who said their conclusions are their own and not the government's. Since then, the economy has grown more rapidly than auto use. Gross domestic product declined for a while during the recession but reversed course in 2009. Auto use has yet to recover.

Meanwhile, the share of people in their teens, 20s and 30s with driver's licenses has been dropping significantly, suggesting that getting a driver's license is no longer the teenage rite of passage it once was.

Researchers are divided on the reasons behind the trends. One camp says the changes are almost entirely linked to the economy. In a few years, as the economy continues to recover, driving will probably bounce back, they reason. At the same time, they acknowledge there could be long-term structural changes in the economy that would prevent a return to the levels of driving growth seen in the past; it's just too soon to know.

The other camp acknowledges that economic factors are important but says the decline in driving also reflects fundamental changes in the way Americans view the automobile. For commuters stuck in traffic, getting into a car no longer correlates with fun. It's also becoming more of a headache to own a car in central cities and downright difficult to park.

"The idea that the car means freedom, I think, is over," said travel behavior analyst .

Gone are the days of the car culture as immortalized in songs like "Hot Rod Lincoln," ''Little Deuce Coupe" and "Pink Cadillac."

"The car as a fetish of masculinity is probably over for certain age groups," McGuckin said. "I don't think young men care as much about the car they drive as they use to."

That's partly because cars have morphed into computers on wheels that few people dare tinker with, she said. "You can't open the hood and get to know it the way you used to," she said.

Lifestyles are also changing. People are doing more of their shopping online. More people are taking public transit than ever before. And biking and walking to work and for recreation are on the rise.
 +
 +
Social networking online may also be substituting for some trips. A study by University of Michigan transportation researcher  found that the decline in teens and young adults with driver's licenses in the U.S. was mirrored in other wealthy countries with a high proportion of Internet users.

Demographic changes are also a factor. The peak driving years for most people are between ages 45 and 55 when they are the height of their careers and have more money to spend, said transportation analyst , author of "Commuting in America." Now, the last of the baby boomers ― the giant cohort born between 1946 and 1964 ― are moving out of their peak driving years.

"They are still the dominant players, and they are moving toward a quieter transportation lifestyle," he said.

There's also a driving gender gap. In a role reversal, there are now more women than men in the U.S. with driver's licenses. And the declines in miles driven over the past decade were more widespread among men than women, according to Pickrell and Pace. Driving by men has declined in every age group except those 65 or older, where it increased slightly. Among women, driving declined only among young adults and teenagers.

There are several economic factors that help explain the trends. Many schools have stopped offering free driver's education to students. Owning a car is increasingly beyond the reach of many young drivers, researchers said.

Research by the  found that 18- to 20-year-olds were three times more likely to have a driver's license if they lived in a household with an annual income above $100,000 than if they lived in a household with an income below $20,000.

"I don't think it's a change in people's preferences. I think it's all economics," McAlinden said. "It might last if the economics stay the same. But if they improve, I think people will come back to driving more. ... Give a person a good job 25 miles away and they'll be at the dealership the next morning."

The decline in driving has important public policy implications. Among the potential benefits are less pollution, less dependence on foreign oil, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and fewer fatalities and injuries. But less driving also means less federal and state gas tax revenues, further reducing funds already in short supply for both highway and transit improvements. On the other hand, less driving may also mean less traffic congestion, although the impact on congestion may vary regionally.

Phineas Baxandall, senior analyst for the liberal U.S. Public Interest Research Group, says driving declines mean transportation dollars could be put to other uses.
