| + | == State explores Dalton Hwy. option for LNG plant == | ||
| + | |||
| + | <html>State officials are pursuing a new twist on a state-led plan to truck liquefied natural gas from a liquefied natural gas plant on the North Slope to fuel oil-dependent Fairbanks. | ||
| + | The idea is to build the small LNG plant south of Prudhoe Bay, along the Dalton Highway, to reduce costs of trucking, State Natural Resources Commissioner Dan Sullivan told a legislative committee in a May 30 briefing. | ||
| + | An idea is being discussed with Trans-Alaska Pipeline System owners to use a small fuel gas pipeline built along the large TAPS oil pipeline. | ||
| + | The fuel gas line now goes from Prudhoe Bay to Pump Station 4 at Galbraith Lake, in the northern Brooks Range, but the plan being considered would have the line extended about 28 miles farther south, beyond Atigun Pass, Sullivan said. | ||
| + | Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., the TAPS operator, built the fuel gas line parallel to the oil pipeline when it was built in 1977, but with TAPS now moving less than a third of its design capacity of 2 million barrels per day, there is spare capacity in the fuel line because less gas is being used at the pump stations. | ||
| + | Also, Alyeska has done reconfigurations of the TAPS pump stations in recent years, and the changes mean that less energy is required for the pump stations. | ||
| + | The new option would build the fuel gas line farther south to a site on Chandalar Shelf, south of the Atigun Pass, Sullivan said. The pass is a constricted area on the Dalton Highway. Building the LNG plant south of the pass would improve safety because LNG tank trucks would not have to navigate the pass daily. | ||
| + | It would also reduce the trucking distance by about 170 miles,[http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/Nike-Patriots-51-Mayo-blue-Game-Jersey-19255/ Nike Patriots 51 Mayo blue Game Jersey], a third of the distance to Fairbanks from Prudhoe Bay. There is also a state highway maintenance station at Chandalar and the presence of the facility would ease permitting of locating an LNG plant there, Sullivan said. | ||
| + | Ted Leonard, executive director of the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, or AIDEA, the state agency leading development of the LNG trucking project, confirmed that a plant along the Dalton Highway is an option being considered. | ||
| + | It s possible that this won t work, but we thought it would be responsible to explore all of the options, Sullivan said. | ||
| + | The idea has been discussed since late last fall when the state and Fairbanks-area utilities began discussing the idea of trucking LNG. | ||
| + | Looking at everything is part of the due diligence we must do, Sullivan said. | ||
| + | People in industry familiar with the North Slope and small-scale LNG projects are cautious about the idea, however. | ||
| + | Ray Latchem, of Spectrum LNG,[http://grant.pfsprogram.org/search/node/ Red states are discriminating], a company that operates small LNG plants in the Lower 48 and that developed a plant for Fairbanks Natural Gas, a private utility now serving Fairbanks, said a plant on the Dalton Highway would make sense only if there was an assured market in Fairbanks. | ||
| + | Latchem said he believes there is a good potential market for LNG as a fuel for use on the North Slope, but he is unsure whether Flint Hills Resources and Golden Valley Electric Association will be able to make firm commitments to buy LNG as anchor tenants for the project. | ||
| + | Latchem, who originally developed the small LNG plant in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough for Fairbanks Natural Gas (LNG is now trucked to Fairbanks up the Parks Highway), is planning his own LNG plant at Prudhoe to serve the local market there, and has also looked at a plant site at Galbraith Lake. | ||
| + | A plant to the south could make sense if both the Fairbanks and North Slope markets could be served,[http://www.pzymxx.com/Review.asp?NewsID=319 Draft wiw coupon sa number of usa hardw essentirider . e .], but Latchem expressed concern about the cost and permitting issues involved with building the fuel line through Atigun Pass. | ||
| + | Meanwhile, Latchem s own plan for a small LNG plant at Prudhoe is on hold until plans for the state-led project,[http://sailaduo.ybk168.com/bbs/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=101717 Hernandez arrest, surgeries for Gronk weaken Patriots at TE], which is being led by the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority, are clarified. | ||
| + | Latchem now owns a small gas utility serving industrial customers in the Deadhorse area where oil field contractors have camps. | ||
| + | AIDEA s project includes leading development of an LNG plant on the Slope in which the authority would own an equity share, and financing development of a gas distribution system serving a wider area of Fairbanks than is now served by Fairbanks Natural Gas. | ||
| + | The combined elements of the project would exceed $400 million in costs with the bulk of it financed by the state authority, mostly through low-interest loans. | ||
| + | The plant would be built with a capacity of processing 9 billion cubic feet per year into LNG. As an investor, AIDEA would own about two-thirds of the plant and two-thirds of the LNG produced, under a plan now being considered. | ||
| + | The state authority would sell LNG to the Interior Alaska utilities at cost, but could sell any of its liquefied gas not sold to utilities to others at a profit. | ||
| + | AIDEA s board will consider the feasibility study of the LNG trucking project in July. | ||

| + | == Cirque du Soleil ticket discounts helped shorten 'Priscilla' == | ||
| + | |||
| + | <html>To use the Sydney-to-Alice Springs route as a reference,[http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/NHL-New-York-Rangers-Big-&-Tall-Women-s-Logo-L.Green-T-Shirt-28510/ NHL New York Rangers Big & Tall Women's Logo L.Green T-Shirt], this bus will have made it to about . | ||
| + | It’ll be a shorter-than-expected road trip for the Las Vegas run of “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert,” as the producers for the Las Vegas run at The Venetian announced Friday that the schedule would be shortened from nine weeks to five. The final show is July 21; it was originally to be Aug. 18. | ||
| + | This was actually the second tweak to the “Priscilla” run at The Venetian. Shortly before opening at the old Phantom Theater on June 20, the musical trimmed its original Vegas schedule from 11 weeks to nine. There was the sense then that sluggish presale ticket orders were the reason, but the adjustment in the schedule was explained thusly: The tour’s producers, Troika Entertainment, received a lucrative offer to move the show’s tour to San Francisco’s Orpheum Theater for those two weeks. | ||
| + | At that, Base Entertainment effectively said, “Go for it. We’re not going to stand in the way of the show making money.” | ||
| + | But when Base on Friday announced “Priscilla” was leaving Vegas in July,[http://www.comeandbuy.com.cn/forum/showtopic-1092367.aspx New Wranglers coach and general manager is familiar face in], the company’s press release cited “an analysis of ticket-sale trends” as the reason. | ||
| + | What are those trends? One is that ticket-buyers in Las Vegas are thriftier than ever and there is an abundance of entertainment on and off the Strip. | ||
| + | Another that creates a seismic shift in the performance of shows all over town is the bargain ticketing offered by Cirque du Soleil. When such a grand and extravagant show as “Priscilla” struggles, Cirque’s ticketing strategy can’t be ignored. | ||
| + | The city’s predominant production company is more aggressive than ever about offering steep (in many cases, 2-for-1) discounts for most of its shows on the Strip. | ||
| + | Examples of : At the moment, you can buy tickets starting at $55 for “Love” and “Zarkana”; $50 for “Mystere,” “Believe” and “Zumanity.” Those are the rates listed before any handling fees or taxes are applied and is about half the regular base ticket price for those shows | ||
| + | A $50-per-ticket discount is offered for all price points, too, and a ticket for “O” can be had for $87.50, a 20-percent savings for what has long been Cirque’s bestselling show. The only show that Cirque is not offering those sorts of discounts is the company’s newest and hottest, “Michael Jackson One” at Mandalay Bay. But the others can be had, relatively speaking, for a song. | ||
| + | It’s accepted that all shows offer discount prices on occasion through varying methods — people walking by the “Absinthe” tent around showtime have been offered $20 tickets by hawkers at the entrance of the venue. Independent brokers make a living at securing high volumes of tickets and making their own cut-rate offers. | ||
| + | But when Cirque bungees down to a lower ticket price, potential customers enjoy an appealing set of choices they wouldn’t typically consider. Is it “Love” for $55 or, say, George Wallace for $66? Is it “O” for $90 or “Million Dollar Quartet” (which has just tightened its own schedule at Harrah’s by going dark on Saturdays) for $75? Is it “Zumanity” for $50 or “Priscilla” for $75? | ||
| + | As you might expect, Cirque often wins such standoffs. When producers and performers, even such long-running stars as Wallace and Carrot Top, talk of the difficulty of selling tickets and today's Vegas, the first example cited is typically Cirque's lowered ticket prices. | ||
| + | To broaden the challenges facing “Priscilla” in Vegas,[http://www.helyreigazitas.tk/?p=4827 Setoguchi excited at opportunity for offence with Jets], it is a show very hard-focused on its demographic. It is a very, um, flamboyant production. This is the show “Jubilee!” looks at and says, “Wow,[http://wordforum.ru/forum/index.php?topic=44895.msg54501#msg54501 Canada's Rocque accepts coaching position with China], you’re flamboyant.” And if flamboyance isn’t your thing, you’re not going to appreciate “Priscilla” very much. | ||
| + | Yes, this is a very smartly written, beautiful, well-performed and expertly staged show. No argument there. The orchestra roars through songs everyone in the audience recognizes. The sequined-splashed costumes and lavishly appointed set — especially the LED-outfitted bus — are terrific. But previous shows that also fit that model, among them “Avenue Q,” “Hairspray” and even “Monty Python’s Spamalot,” were not universally adored by Vegas tourists and closed too soon. | ||
| + | The writing in “Priscilla” is particularly sharp and smart, the “I’m looking at a whore moan” line typical of its searing wit. But after laughing my way through the show twice (once in L.A. and again at The Venetian), I recalled renowned producer and director Hal Prince’s comments last August after “Phantom — The Las Vegas Spectacular” closed: “This is a hard time for ‘book’ shows in Las Vegas. … The climate here is that those types of shows are a hard sell for a lot of reasons. I think the international audience has a tough time with those types of shows.” | ||
| + | By the end of its run, “Priscilla” will have performed 30 times in Las Vegas. It will have played more dates in Las Vegas than in any city on its current North American tour, and that is a high volume of tickets to move for a show that is worth the price. | ||
| + | This is not an instance where the production was anything but wonderful. It is an instance where the show met up with some stiff competition, and where even the most powerful companies will halve prices to fill seats. | ||

| + | |||
| + | <html>Bartoli beats Lisicki in straight sets for Wimbledon title{eot}The Canadian Press7/6/2013 12:26:38 PMText Size | ||
| + | LONDON -- Ever since she was a kid, practicing until midnight with her father, Marion Bartoli went about playing tennis her own way. | ||
| + | The two-handed strokes for backhands, forehands, even volleys. The hopping in place and practice swings between points, which help her focus. The unusual setup for serves -- no ball-bouncing,[http://bbs.xpphone.net/home.php?mod=space&uid=176975 ], arms crossed, right wrist resting on her left thumb before the toss. | ||
| + | Whatever works, right? This unique Wimbledon, appropriately enough, produced a unique champion in the ambidextrous Bartoli, the 15th-seeded Frenchwoman who won her first Grand Slam title by beating 23rd-seeded Sabine Lisicki of Germany 6-1, 6-4 Saturday in an error-filled, one-sided final that was far from a classic. | ||
| + | It's always been a part of my personality to be different. I think being just like the other one is kind of boring. I really embrace the fact of being a bit different and doing something that not everyone is, the 28-year-old Bartoli said. I actually love that part of my game, being able to have something different. | ||
| + | She certainly stands alone. | ||
| + | This was Bartoli's 47th Grand Slam tournament,[http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/Nike-Colts-12-Luck-White-Game-Women-Jerseys-20246/ Nike Colts 12 Luck White Game Women Jerseys], the most ever played by a woman before earning a championship. | ||
| + | She is the only woman in the 45-year Open era to win Wimbledon playing two-fisted shots off both wings (Monica Seles, Bartoli's inspiration for that unusual style, collected her nine major titles elsewhere). | ||
| + | Until Saturday, it had been more than 1 1/2 years since Bartoli won a tournament at any level. | ||
| + | Until these last two weeks, Bartoli's record in 2013 was 14-12, and she had failed to make it past the quarterfinals anywhere. | ||
| + | Asked how to explain how she went from that sort of mediocre season to winning seven matches in a row at Wimbledon, never dropping a set, Bartoli briefly closed her eyes, then laughed heartily. | ||
| + | Well, Bartoli said, spreading her arms wide, that's me! | ||
| + | Unlike Lisicki, a first-time major finalist who was admittedly overwhelmed by the occasion and teared up in the second set, Bartoli already had been on this stage, with the same stakes. Back in 2007, Bartoli won only five games during a two-set loss to Venus Williams in the Wimbledon final. | ||
| + | I know how it feels, Sabine, Bartoli said during the on-court trophy ceremony. And I'm sure, believe me, you'll be there one more time. I have no doubt about it. | ||
| + | Bartoli became the first woman in the Open era to win Wimbledon without facing anyone seeded in the top 10 -- her highest-rated opponent was No. 17 Sloane Stephens of the United States in the quarterfinals. That's in part because of all of the injuries and surprises, including exits for No. 2 Victoria Azarenka, No. 3 Maria Sharapova, No. 5 Sara Errani, No. 7 Angelique Kerber, No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki and No. 10 Maria Kirilenko by the end of the second round. | ||
| + | Lisicki,[http://bbs.xpphone.net/home.php?mod=space&uid=176975 ], meanwhile, used her game built for grass -- fast serves, stinging returns, superb court coverage -- to end defending champion and top-seeded Serena Williams' 34-match winning streak in the fourth round. Lisicki also eliminated past major champions Francesca Schiavone and Sam Stosur, along with No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska,[http://www.immobiliendienste.de/wiki/index.php?title=Benutzer:Prosper95#Gibbs_Racing_sweeps_front_row_at_Daytona_with_Busch.2C_Kenseth Gibbs Racing sweeps front row at Daytona with Busch, Kenseth], last year's runner-up. | ||
| + | But Lisicki was an entirely different player Sunday, rattled by every little thing, even the walk downstairs from the locker room to Centre Court and the final-afternoon ritual of players carrying bouquets of flowers when they enter the arena. | ||
| + | Everything is a little bit different. You've been here for two weeks; the feeling, atmosphere, gets different, said Lisicki, who is based in Bradenton, Fla., and marked her rare winners Saturday with yells of Yes! or Come on! | ||
| + | I felt fine this morning, but it's an occasion that you don't get every day, she said. So it's something completely new for me. But I will learn and take away so much from it. | ||
| + | When play began under a sunny sky, it was Bartoli who looked jittery, double-faulting twice in a row to drop the opening game. | ||
| + | Then it was Lisicki's turn to serve, and she returned the favour, double-faulting on break point -- her last serve barely reaching the bottom of the net -- to make it 1-all. | ||
| + | From there, Bartoli took over. She won 11 of the next 12 games, doing exactly what her father, a doctor who taught his daughter how to play, used to hope and imagine could happen in such an important match. Standing inside the baseline -- another sign of individuality -- Bartoli got back serves that topped 110 mph. She won the point on 9 of 11 trips to the net. She dictated the flow of baseline exchanges, thinking one or two moves ahead, the way one tries to do in chess, her father's favourite pastime. | ||
| + | I was doing everything well, Bartoli said. I was moving well. I was returning well. I mean, I really played a wonderful match. | ||
| + | It was not exactly the greatest theatre or a How To guide for young players. Bartoli and Lisicki combined for more unforced errors, 39, than winners, 36. They finished with 11 doubles-faults and eight aces. When Lisicki double-faulted twice in one game while getting broken to trail 4-1 in the second set, she covered her face with her racket as her eyes welled. | ||
| + | I was a bit sad that I couldn't perform the way I can, Lisicki said. | ||
| + | The sole portion of the match when she did look like someone who entered the day with a 19-4 career record at Wimbledon -- the afternoon's lone, brief moment of intrigue and competitive tennis -- came with Lisicki on the precipice of defeat. Facing match points while serving at 15-40 with a scoreline of 6-1, 5-1 in Bartoli's favour after only 67 minutes, Lisicki suddenly remembered how to play again. | ||
| + | She hit a swinging backhand volley winner to erase one match point, then a 106 mph service winner to take of the next. Another followed shortly, and this time Bartoli put a backhand into the net. At deuce, Lisicki smacked a 115 mph service winner and a 114 mph ace to hold serve for the second time in seven tries. | ||
| + | Bartoli, who said she danced to music in the locker room beforehand to stay loose, now was the one who was tight. With the crowd roaring after nearly every point, wanting more match for their money, Lisicki broke to 5-3, then held to 5-4. | ||
| + | Lisicki put together third-set comebacks against Williams and Radwanska, but could she really dig herself out of this hefty deficit? | ||
| + | No. Bartoli served out the match at love, using that one-of-a-kind serve to close with a 101 mph ace that hit a line and sent chalk dust spraying. | ||
| + | You can't describe that kind of feeling. You cannot put (into) any words what I feel in this moment, Bartoli said. I can't believe I won Wimbledon this year. We'll have to see the pictures, to see the match again on DVD, to ... realize it. | ||
| + | So might everyone else.</html> | ||

| + | <html>Facebook Fark Digg Reddit Stumble Mountain s residents live with constant threat of forestfires Rental cabins are shown in Kyle Canyon on Mount Charleston on Thursday, April 5,2012. By () Tuesday, July 9, 2013 | 2 a.m. Related stories For residents of the 400 homes that make up the Mount Charleston community, forest fires like the one currently burning on more than 15,000 acres there are disasters that can be prepared for but not entirely protected against. Homes are spread across three main areas on the mountain – Kyle Canyon, Lee Canyon and Trout Canyon – which each contain multiple housing subdivisions. The fire, which has been burning on the mountain since it was started by a lightning strike July 1, threatens all 501 structures on the mountain, including the 400 homes, an elementary school, a library, several businesses and two fire stations. Although there’s a constant threat of forest fires,[http://wiki.touhou.nu/index.php/Anv%C3%A4ndare:Rendedqn91#Wimbledon_title_gives_Bryans_four_straight_grand_slams Wimbledon title gives Bryans four straight grand slams], residents and visitors are provided with guidelines through brochures and community awareness meetings to help prevent such fires. The Clark County Fire Department and volunteer firefighters regularly stage community cleanups for pine needles, vegetation and other debris that could provide fuel for the flames. Several dangerous actions, including building campfires outside of established areas, smoking except in enclosed vehicles, igniting fireworks or operating welding torches and other fire-generating devices without a permit are outlawed under state statute, with violators facing a $1,000 fine or up to six months in jail. Homeowners are provided with further ways to reduce the threat and minimize damage from forest fires, including clearing leaves and other debris from gutters, porches and decks, removing flammable materials within 30 feet of a home or outbuilding, and pruning tree branches so the lowest are at least 6 feet above the ground. Structures in the area also are subject to unique building codes not found elsewhere in the valley, although most deal with the snow and ice that is prevalent in the winter months. The only fire-related provision forbids the use of wooden roof shakes or shingles of any kind; instead, fire-resistant materials such as tile, asphalt or metal are recommended. Residents in the area also pay more on their property taxes, about 88 cents per $100,000 of assessed value, to help fund the Mount Charleston Fire Protection District, which pays for services provided by the Nevada Division of Forestry fire station besides combating wildfires. Those services include responding to car accidents, medical incidents, and search-and-rescue cases. Four Clark County fire engines, each manned by four firefighters, are assisting in the fight against the Mount Charleston fire, in part by clearing debris and moving patio furniture and other flammable materials away from structures to prevent the fire from spreading should it reach the community, Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa said. An additional 20 to 30 volunteer firefighters have also been assisting in the efforts, he said. Most of the activity has been focused on Kyle Canyon, the most heavily populated and developed portion of the mountain that serves as the main entry point for most visitors to the area. Homes in the area are broken down into four subdivisions – Rainbow Canyon, the first subdivision encountered on Kyle Canyon Road off U.S. 95; Old Town, the historic center of the community with buildings dating to the 1950s that include the school and library; Cathedral, a subdivision near Mount Charleston Lodge; and Echo Canyon, which includes homes on the ridge across the canyon from the lodge. Homes range from 500 square feet to 10,000 square feet, and values stretch upwards of $1 million, topping out at $2.3 million, according to Angie Tomashowski,[http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/Toronto-Raptors-Custom-red-Road-Jersey-13296/ Toronto Raptors Custom red Road Jersey], co-owner of Mount Charleston Realty. Other areas affected by the fire include Lee Canyon, which has several homes surrounding the ski resort, and Trout Canyon, which has fewer than 30 homes in a community off Blue Diamond Road near Lovell Canyon on the way to Pahrump. | + | PARIS -- Regardless of the setting or the surface, Rafael Nadal confounds Roger Federer the way no other man can. | ||
| + | Put the two greats of the game on opposite ends of a court in a Grand Slam final -- particularly at Roland Garros, on the red clay that Nadal rules -- and the one-sided nature of the rivalry grows even more pronounced. | ||
| + | Grinding along the baseline, using every inch of his wingspan to extend points, whipping fearsome forehands this way and that, Nadal flummoxed Federer yet again Sunday in a riveting, highlight-filled match, beating him 7-5, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1 for a record-tying sixth French Open championship and 10th major title overall. | ||
| + | He plays better against the better ones, and that's what he showed today, said Federer, owner of 16 Grand Slam trophies. He's a great champion, on clay, especially. | ||
| + | There's no question that Nadal is as good as it gets in Paris -- 45-1 for his career, and the same number of titles there as Bjorn Borg -- but the Spaniard already also has shown that he is much more than the King of Clay. And Sunday's victory only will raise more questions about whether Federer truly deserves to be called the Greatest of All Time if he is not even the Greatest of Right Now. | ||
| + | Nadal leads their head-to-head series 17-8. That includes a 6-2 advantage in Grand Slam finals and a 5-0 edge at the French Open (in the 2005 semifinals, and the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011 finals). | ||
| + | When a reporter recited those numbers and asked for an assessment, Nadal replied: Well, it means I can play well, too. | ||
| + | When you talk about these statistics, when you try and make these comparisons, really it's not very interesting to me, continued Nadal, who would have ceded the No. 1 ranking to Novak Djokovic with a loss Sunday. I'm very happy with what I have, with who I am. I'm not the best player in the history of tennis. I think I'm among the best. That's true. That's enough for me. | ||
| + | He's rapidly gaining on Federer. Nadal turned 25 Friday, making him about six months younger than Federer was when the Swiss star collected his 10th major title. | ||
| + | Their rivalry is a friendly -- not heated -- one. Nadal conceded a point Sunday when he saw Federer's shot landed in but was called out. A few years ago, Federer gave Nadal a lift on a private jet from one tournament site to another after learning his on-court nemesis had trouble finding a commercial flight. | ||
| + | This was their first meeting in a Grand Slam final in more than two years. It also was the first major championship match contested by any two men who already completed career Grand Slams. And Nadal and Federer put on a worthy show, more than 3 1/2 hours chock-full of lengthy exchanges, brilliant defence, sublime shotmaking, and some dizzying shifts of momentum. | ||
| + | A big occasion, the third-seeded Federer said. I was aware of it. | ||
| + | He won't acknowledge publicly that Nadal drives him crazy with those high-bouncing lefty forehands that arrive shoulder-high on Federer's backhand side, and that perpetual-motion, cover-every-spot, never-cede-a-thing scrambling that forces an opponent to produce several superb shots just to earn a single point. | ||
| + | It's always pretty straightforward when we play each other ... because we know what to expect, Federer said. I'm not in any way frustrated with his play. | ||
| + | Perhaps that's true, but consider this: Federer is 14-1 in the Grand Slam finals he has played against any other opponent. The only time Federer won the French Open, in 2009, he avoided Nadal, who was eliminated in the fourth round that year by Robin Soderling. | ||
| + | Nadal, for his part, doesn't like to boast about his supremacy over Federer, whom he always refers to as the top player ever. | ||
| + | But Toni Nadal, Rafael's uncle and coach, spoke plainly after Sunday's match. | ||
| + | The game of Rafael is not too good for Roger, Toni said, adding that Federer's mentality against Rafael is not the best. | ||
| + | On Sunday, Federer raced to a 5-2 at the outset, but blew a set point by missing a drop shot that landed barely wide. | ||
| + | I definitely thought that I got maybe a touch unlucky there, and he got a touch lucky, Federer said. That was one of my bigger chances. | ||
| + | Nadal then won seven games in a row. Later, when Nadal went up a break in the third and led 4-2, the match appeared over, until Federer charged back to force a fourth set. | ||
| + | But Nadal once more assumed control, winning the last five games, then dropping to his knees and leaning forward with his hands covering his eyes. | ||
| + | I was able to play my best when I needed my best, Nadal said. For that reason, today I am here with the trophy. | ||
| + | Midway through the tournament, Nadal talked down his chances, admonishing himself for not hitting the ball with enough conviction and questioning whether he was playing well enough to take home the title. After all,[http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/NFL-Size-Caps-004-11860/ NFL Size Caps-004], he fell behind unseeded John Isner of the United States 2-1 in sets in the first round, pushed to five sets for the only time in his seven trips to the French Open. | ||
| + | Last week, when Rafael was playing so badly, Uncle Toni recounted Sunday evening, to lift some of the pressure,[http://www.mono-ya.com/blog/archives/2013/06/post_458.php#comments L. e .vinside; A ghtent elemurate crystalsvery del], I told him: 'Stay calm. Winning or losing won't change your life. ' | ||
| + | Not that Sunday's match needed any assistance in the drama department, but a little extra came in the form of a rain delay -- the very first of the entire 15-day tournament -- while Nadal was serving to take a two-set lead. | ||
| + | He had a set point at 5-4, 40-30, but wasted it with a forehand that clipped the net and flew long. That made it deuce, and that's when drops began falling. As spectators pulled on hats and popped open umbrellas, Nadal and Federer waited a few seconds before walking off the court. | ||
| + | Federer slipped into a private trainer's room and hopped up on a table. Nadal switched shirts and fidgeted with his racket strings in a hallway, then had a brief chat with his mentor. | ||
| + | Rafael was very nervous in the locker-room, Uncle Toni said. I (told) him: 'It's difficult for you. But it's very difficult for him, too. ' | ||
| + | After a 10-minute break, the match resumed, and Nadal immediately earned a second set point. But Federer saved that one, too, opening an eight-point run for him. And then it was Nadal's turn to take eight points in a row, including a 4-0 lead in the tiebreaker, which he eventually closed with a forehand winner. | ||
| + | Federer wasn't finished, breaking Nadal at love to get within 4-3 in the third set. When Federer struck a forehand winner down the line to break again and go ahead 6-5, he earned a standing ovation and chants of Ro-ger! Ro-ger! from thousands of fans at Court Philippe Chatrier. | ||
| + | When Roger plays like this, Nadal said, the opponent has nothing to do, sometimes. | ||
| + | With the crowd roaring each time he won a point, Federer served out the set, capping it with another forehand winner. The outcome seemed in doubt. Federer had won 117 points, Nadal 116. | ||
| + | All of a sudden, at 0-0 in the fourth set, Federer said, you think, 'OK, we have a match again. ' | ||
| + | Nadal served to begin the fourth set, and Federer quickly gained three break points at love-40. This, then, would be the final twist. Nadal erased two break points with groundstroke winners, and the third with an ace at 120 m.p.h. A service winner at 114 m.p.h. followed. Then Federer shanked a backhand off his frame and into the stands. | ||
| + | Very important for me, no? Nadal would say later. That was a big turning point of the match, in my opinion. | ||
| + | That made it 1-0, and Federer held to 1-1. But that was it. Nadal didn't lose another game as the sun finally broke through the grey clouds,[http://bmwhylc.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1036980 UNLV verbal commit Dwayne Morgan- 'Rebels for life'_0], bathing the court in light. An appropriate conclusion for Nadal, the kid from the island of Mallorca who loves to spend free time fishing or at the beach. | ||
| + | On the back of each of the sky-blue sneakers that kept carrying him to balls that should have been out of reach, Nadal had the number 5 in a circle -- signifying his French Open title count until Sunday. | ||

| + | == FISH FACTOR- Salmon feed prices on the rise; strong chum lan == | ||
| + | |||
| + | <html>Alaska spends more than $20 million on fish feed each year for its 35 salmon hatcheries feed that comes primarily from anchovies caught in South America. Meanwhile Alaska seafood processing companies produce over 200,000 tons of fishmeal each year for customers in Asia. | ||
| + | Last year 33 million fish 20 percent of the total Alaska salmon harvest originated in hatcheries; in some years the figure has topped 30 percent. At Prince William Sound, for example, 73 percent of the salmon catch originated in local hatcheries. | ||
| + | The most costly part of any hatchery or farmed fish business is the feed it represents 60 to 70 percent of production costs. The bulk of the feed is made from ground up wild fish, such as anchovies, herring or menhaden which totaled 870 million tons in 2011, valued at $350 billion. | ||
| + | According to Chilean fish feed company Camanchaca, fishmeal prices are set to increase 18 percent this year to $1,750 per ton, an 18 percent increase. | ||
| + | Roughly 10 percent of global fish catches go to fishmeal, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization,[http://www.trafikbuller.se/mediawiki/index.php/Anv%C3%A4ndare:Prosper74#EDITORIAL-_Motives_dont_matter_in_Treadwells_r EDITORIAL- Motives dont matter in Treadwells r],[http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/Nike-Falcons-11-Jones-Red-Women-Elite-Skirts-25156/ Nike Falcons 11 Jones Red Women Elite Skirts], or FAO. It takes up to four pounds of wild fishmeal to grow one pound of farmed salmon,[http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/YMCMB-Caps-026-17295/ YMCMB Caps-026], and the industry is facing increasing criticism to find other food sources. To the rescue in the search for alternative and sustainable proteins insects! | ||
| + | Tests are showing that all kinds of insects can be an attractive option in the global search for alternative and sustainable proteins. The FAO s Animal Feed Resources Information System, called Feedipedia, claims that the high crude fat content in black soldier flies provide high value feedstuff for both fish and livestock. Silkworms, maggots, mealworms, termites all provide meal nutrients of varying types and degrees. | ||
| + | Topping the list for best insect-based fish feed is grasshoppers or locusts (acridids) of any kind. Feeding trials on certain fish species showed that diets in which 25 and 50 per cent of fishmeal was replaced with grasshopper meal produced results as good as the control diet with100 percent fishmeal. All growth parameters measured for the selected fish were higher for the feed containing grasshopper meal than for those fed with conventional feeds. The possibility of recovering chitin from the insects used for fish feed is also being explored. | ||

| + | Dippin in the Yukon | ||
| + | The first commercial salmon dipnet fishery on the Lower Yukon River is a resounding success. Seafood.com reports that landings by about 90 fishermen are approaching 40,000 chums so far. | ||
| + | The use of dipnets is a new regulation passed by the state Board of Fisheries in January as a way to allow a chum fishery while protecting the Yukon s dwindling numbers of king salmon. Over the past several years, the chum fishery has been held up due to chinook conservation needs. The dip nets allow for the safe return of king salmon into the river; not a single king salmon has been harmed so far. | ||
| + | The Yukon chum run is extremely strong this summer and could top three million fish. The dip net fishermen are earning about $5,000 per week in the new fishery. | ||

Imports to the U.S. have approached 80 million pounds of fresh Atlantic salmon fillets, an increase of roughly 21 percent and an all-time record for U.S. salmon imports. Overall, the U.S. salmon market has expanded significantly, with strong demand and prices, although retail prices tend to drop off a bit at this time of year.</html> | ||
