As a disclaimer, you'll generally see me as less than critical of John Harbaugh and the job he does coaching the Ravens. Part of that is because I pump the brakes on my criticism of a coach when I don't have all the facts.

The first and most obvious occurred during the Ravens' fifth possession, when they were trailing, 3-0. As had been the case before that series, when Baltimore took over with 9:13 to go during the second quarter, the team's offensive line was getting next to no push up front,[http://philipcareaids.org/Involve.html Custom Denver Broncos NFL Jerseys For Sale], and Baltimore was all but stuck in the mud running the ball.

On a second-and-four play from the Green Bay 8-yard line, the Packers were flagged for defensive holding, which gave the Ravens a first down at the 4-yard line. Surely, they could have gotten at least a field goal from there and tied the game at 3.

But four plays later, the Ravens turned the ball over on downs at the 1-yard line. This came after four frustrating run calls, which produced a 2-yard gain by running back Ray Rice, a 1-yard gain by Rice, a no gain by Rice and then a no gain by Bernard Pierce.

So how did Harbaugh answer questions addressed at his decisions to run four straight rushing plays and go for a touchdown on fourth down instead of attempting a field goal?

"You had fourth-and-1," Harbaugh told the media after the game. "You've got a high-percentage opportunity to make that fourth-and-1. I like our chances there. If you don't make it, you've got them backed up on their own 1 and feel really good about making them punt out of their own end zone."

Pardon me, but even without that degree in pigskin, I know a couple of things. No. 1, the game is about who scores more points at the end of the game, not who backs up whom. And as far as the call on fourth-and-goal from the 1 being a high-percentage play, was Harbaugh watching the same game the rest of us were? During the previous nine running plays (eight of them by Rice) up until that fourth-and-goal, the Ravens had rushed for zero yards on the ground. Sorry, Harbaugh, running for a 10th time to get that yard was stubborn and did little to help your team win the game.

The second decision that cost the Ravens a chance to win this game came when there were 20 seconds left during the first half. After Packers kicker Mason Crosby had missed 44-yard field goal and handed Baltimore a gift horse in the mouth,[http://philipcareaids.org/Involve.html Denver Broncos Jerseys Wholesale], the Ravens took over on their own 34.

For some inexplicable reason, Harbaugh decided it was a good idea to gain the 35-40 yards necessary to give kicker Justin Tucker a 45- to 50-yard field goal try.

After the first-down throw to receiver Torrey Smith went incomplete, there were 12 ticks on the clock, enough time to take a knee, go into halftime and come back out to get the first possession of the second half down by three points.

Instead, quarterback Joe Flacco was sacked and fumbled the ball, which Green Bay defensive end Datone Jones recovered and returned 20 yards to the Baltimore 13. That set up Crosby's 31-yard field goal, which gave the Packers a 6-0 halftime lead. Let's let Harbaugh say in his own words what he decided to do and why.

"I felt like we had a good chance with our kicker," he said. "We had a better chance to complete a pass [or] get an offensive pass interference than we did to have that [sack] happen. You've got confidence in your guys. You give your guys a chance to make plays in situations like that. [The Packers] made a nice play, and it cost us three points."

When Mike Preston of The Baltimore Sun asked a follow-up question about these same two plays,[http://metrorailindia.com/nba-jerseys.html cheap nba basketball jerseys], Harbaugh said, "We don't want to be the kind of team that's going to play nervous."

No one brought up nerves until Harbaugh used the word, and it seemed as if that word "nervous" best describes how he is coaching that offense right now.

Flacco also deserves some blame, and some questions about his leadership of this football team. Could he have overruled his coach on the decision to try an ill-advised throw with 12 seconds to go and needing 35-45 seconds?

Sometimes leadership has to play by that adage that discretion is the better part of valor. Harbaugh usually lives by that adage. Oct. 13 was not one of those times.
