The program by local leadership development company Focus Training, based in the Third Ward, aims to help freshmen make more successful transitions to high school by establishing ongoing relationships with upperclassmen, who learn leadership skills through the program.

MHSA is the only Milwaukee public high school using the program, called Ignition. But Todd Gehrmann, who founded Focus Training 21 years ago, said the group works with other local schools such as St. Francis High School and Brown Deer High School. Their school clients include 250 to 300 schools out of state, from Wyoming to Alaska.

The company's school-centered training programs, which target helping students transition to high school and to college, make up the bulk of their work, Gehrmann said. But the resurgence in corporate training requests post-recession has fueled recent revenue growth.

I don't want to jinx us, but this year has been our busiest year ever, Gehrmann said. We're looking at 80% to 100% growth.

Gehrmann is an MPS parent with kids at Golda Meir and said he's excited to be working with the district for the first time.

The best ratio at the high school level, Gehlmann said, is to have two upperclass mentors work with about 10 freshmen. We sit down with schools and talk about what their needs are, said Gehrmann. For some schools, that might be dropouts. Other schools where 100% of the students are going to college often have other concerns.

Schools using the Ignition program have reported more students participating in school-related activities, and decreases in habitual truancy and suspensions, according to Gerhmann.

Like most schools, Applewhite uses grant money to pay for the program.

I liked how it focused on training the teachers first, who then trained the student mentors, who then trained the freshmen, Applewhite said. It got everyone involved and working with each other.

Gehrmann said most contracts with schools range from $2,000 to $12,000 for one year of the program. On Monday, sophomore, junior and senior mentors outside of MHSA wore pink tie-dyed shirts and worked with new students, forming group cheers and doing silly activities to learn everyone's names.

Of all the activities last year, I remember this day the most, said Maija Whitefeather, a sophomore mentor who shushed her fellow mentors from giving the freshmen too many instructions on how to get people through the netting.

Whitefeather participated as a freshman in the program's inaugural year last year and said she found it helpful.

Brighton Britsch, another sophomore mentor who participated as a freshman last year, said the Ignition program helps motivate incoming freshmen and helps students from different grade levels keep in touch over the year.</html>
