I m pretty pleased and perplexed at this year s draft. With both of our projected starting ILB s coming off injury I really felt (and thought the Texans would agree) that the position needed quality depth. There s been talk of moving Reed inside, which is a viable option, but I think he s a better OLB. Then there s the talk that the other ILB not named Cushing is only a two-down position anyway,[http://ischoolgu.xmu.edu.cn/wiki/index.php/User:KevinLee201#Ultimate_Astros_Astros_potential_trade_list Ultimate Astros Astros potential trade list], which is true. In that respect, it made sense to draft a legit safety to groom behind Ed Reed. Swearinger can play both safety spots and will see a fair amount of playing time since Wade uses 3 safeties quite often. But again, we are going to be hurting at ILB if we have to rely on any of our current back-up s have to play significant time.

Aside from the intensity and leadership Brian Cushing brings to the field, his talent was sorely missed last season. I said it in the chat and I ll say it again: losing Cush changed the dynamics of our defense. Bradie James, a serviceable at best ILB, was exposed without Cushing. Also exposed were Connor Barwin (3 sacks), Reed and even Glover Quin in my opinion. Without Cushing Wade was forced to bring a safety up closer a lot of the time. Add to that the attention Barwin and Reed got without a legit ILB behind them and both suffered from it. I don t think I even need to pull out stats last year before the Cush injury and after to remind everyone of how the defense dropped off significantly towards the end of the season. It wasn t just because of the one position, it was because of the talent level of the player at that position and what he does on the field.

Fast forward to 2013. I fully believe Cush will be 100% come opening day, but I d be a pure homer not to ask what if? Anything can happen. He could return a bit rusty. He could have a set back. Let s hope not, but what if? So for the Texans to not draft a single ILB just baffled me.

We did sign several (whoopie!) undrafted free agents. Let s hope the Texans find another diamond in the rough. Then there s always the other team s rejects once cuts start in pre-season. Remember that 2nd round saftey we picked up off the couch? So those are our best options as depth at the ILB spots. We have Tim Dobbins,[http://pelzoptions.com/ More Bricks Than Helium Balloons], Cameron Collins and some dude named Mike Mohamed on the roster to go with our undrafted free agents. How much faith do we have in that group to play significant time if needed? Exactly Mike who?

Ok enough about that. I know going into last season the right side of the O-Line was a big question mark. Guess what. It still is. Gone are both starters from last season that were supposed to be the answers. Projected to start are two 2nd year guys from last year s draft. Their back up is another 2nd year guy from last year. The Texans (hopefully) answered the call for a legit #2 WR and future standout to fill Andre s shoes when he decides to hang his up. I still like Martin and Jean and I still would like to see what Posey can do when he gets healthy again with a little age and experience under his cap. I think we have some solid talent in that group.

We added two D-Linemen and another OLB in the draft. Antonio Smith is entering his final year of his original 5-year deal. He could be a cap casualty after next season with Cushing, Sharpton, Wade Smith, Ben Tate, Earl Mitchell,[http://www.hostcolor.com/ Initial Jobless Claims Rise 16,000 in Week Ended July 6], Lestar Jean,[http://wiki.ubuntubuch.calyrium.org/index.php/Benutzer:Taylor325#North_Slope_police_investigate_discovery_of_body_on_coast North Slope police investigate discovery of body on coast], Garrett Graham, and a few others all with expiring contracts after 2013. Drafting Sam Montgomery in the 3rd might ensure Smith s next season here is his last if we don t play Montgomery at OLB. I like the Ninja, don t get me wrong, but he s an expensive Ninja, counting $6 mil against the 2013 cap. How much he will command after next season is anyone s guess so if we can restructure or resign him on the cheap that would be ideal. If not, we ll have Montgomery entering his second year.

As with most of Rick Smith s drafts, this one left me scratching my head. But I am a believer and I think RS deserves the benefit of the doubt when it comes to drafts. I know some will disagree, and that s fine, but I ve been pretty happy with the past several draft classes.

I think only time will tell how this class will fare. I m excited to see DeAndre lined up with Andre. DeAndre looks like an Andre clone in the highlight reels I ve watched of him. He isn t the fastest guy out there but he s big and he has great hand and can go up and bring some tough passes down. It ll be fun to see what opposing defenses do when there s two of them out there.
