Nouvelle page

Watching a tennis match between two encouraging juniors, the other a New Zealander and one an Australian, early in the day this year, I discovered an extremely interesting incident. At matchpoint down in the next set, the Australian person plainly failed in an attempt to operate down a volley from his opposition. Sweeping the ball (which had obviously bounced twice) over his opponent's head, the Australian player continued to take care of the idea like it were still 'live.' Meanwhile, the Brand New Zealander, sure that the match was over, headed towards the net to shake his opponent's hand. With the exception of the umpire, everybody else who was there, such as the person, knew that the ball had bounced twice. Despite a protest and an to his opponent's loyalty, the New Zealander 'lost' the idea, came quite close to 'losing' the set, and, I'm sure, might have found it exceedingly difficult to get the match had it gone to a third set. Had that been the case, had the Australian won the match, would it have been a of dishonesty, perhaps not loyalty, being the very best policy? All things considered, when it comes to activity, isn't it an incident of winning being every thing, even when it involves cheating? And even if it's not an instance of either dishonesty being the best policy or of winning being everything, how can you explain to a young person who has just lost due to his opponent's dishonesty that honesty is the best policy, and that winning, if it requires cheating, (or even if it doesn't), ISN'T everything. It's my contention that any attempt to win by means of cheating routinely brands the cheat as the loss -- regardless of what the results, even though others might argue. Aside from the fact that any honest spectator can't help but lose all respect for a cheat, much more significantly, a cheat can't help but lose all respect for himself. Regardless of how hard he tries, he can't escape the negative consequences of his dishonest actions. He can't evade the very fact that he's used deceit to achieve some thing (a fake gain) that otherwise would not have been his. By doing this, he should stay using the self-knowledge -- in addition to the knowledge of any viewer -- that he's defaulted to the principle of loyalty, and as an alternative, develop into a cheat. He is able to never feel happy, in the true sense of the word, about his alleged win. Therefore, I would explain to any young tennis player who has just lost to a cheat, and who, as a result, mistakenly believes that tricks do prosper, that nothing could be further from the facts. And to produce my point, I would then ask him if he had like to trade places, if limited to a second, with anyone who has a deserved reputation as a cheat, or if he would feel good about winning through cheating. Discussing sports ethics with children is really important for two reasons: The very first is that activity provides them with one of the top opportunities to formulate the moral principles which they are able to then apply in most spheres and periods of later life. The second reason is that sports tips give the purity of healthy competition a poor name, and must, therefore, be roundly condemned.
