Fils du joueur de hockey '''Perttu Selänne''' et de la pilote automobile [[Gabrielle Laukkanen]], Sam est arrivé au [[Cinéjeu Island]] alors qu'il n'avait par encore deux ans et il a grandit sur l'ile. Malgré cela, il court sous licence Finlandaise, pour sa maman bien sur mais aussi pour honorer la mémoire de son grand-père, pilote de rallye en son temps. C'est aussi pour cette raison que Sam court sous le nom de sa mère plutôt que sous son véritable patronyme.<br >
Sam est très proche de sa petite-sœur adoptive [[Leeni Power|Leeni]], malgré la différence d'âge, ainsi que de son beau-père [[Nicolas Power]], marié à sa mère depuis 2034.<br >
En 2051, Sam épouse l'Italienne [[Graziella Camuzzi]], de onze ans son ainé, et nouvelle team principal de l'équipe [[AETG]] en [[F74]].
