== If UW’s Keith Price needs motivation, he’s got i ==

<html>Just took a good, hard look at some of the preseason college football magazines that have trickled into publication the past month or so. If you re a University of Washington follower, you probably won t be wowed by what you read. If I were to characterize the take on the UW, it s a mix of skepticism and guarded optimism. And if you were to probe beneath that outlook, it s fair to say much of those reservations have to do with less-than-glowing assessments of quarterback Keith Price.
Being a big believer in the bounce theory, I tend to think they re underselling Price in a major way and if that holds true, by association, they also may be underestimating the Huskies.
First, some of the particulars: Phil Steele s respected college football preview picks Washington 30th, as does Lindy s. Athlon has Washington 37th.
Meanwhile, Price s sub-par junior season clearly cost him a ton of acclaim entering his final year (for what that s worth). On his list of draft-eligible (2014) quarterbacks, Steele has Price 39th, a fairly shocking rating, given that he has Ball State s Keith Wenning 22nd, LSU s Zach Mettenberger 27th,[http://bbs.cnfilm.org/ Saini to serve 15 years to life_0], Tulsa s Cody Green 28th, Garrett Gilbert of SMU 34th and Everett Golson of Notre Dame 38th. Everett Golson, ahead of Price? (Since Steele s copy deadline, Golson was suspended for the 2013 season for academic deficiences.)
Steele isn t the only magazine to lowball Price. Lindy s doesn t have him in its top 25 of quarterback ratings. And on a list of fantasy college quarterbacks, he doesn t make Lindy s top 40. If you believe Price will be the UW quarterback all season, I m thinking he d be a terrific fantasy quarterback, given his school-record 33 touchdown passes in 2011 and his running capability.
Steele doesn t share the notion that Washington quarterbacking is in good hands with Price and redshirt freshman Cyler Miles in the wings. He has the Huskies 36th in a ranking of strength of the position.
Of course, the read on Price isn t an easy one. Is he the guy who riddled Baylor for seven touchdowns in the 2011 Alamo Bowl, spurring mention as a fringe candidate for the next year s Heisman Trophy? Or is he the fumble-thumbed guy of 2012 who burped up the ball to WSU defensive lineman Toni Pole on the Huskies only possession of overtime in the Apple Cup? I d contend that, by that bounce theory, we ll see more of the 2011 edition of Price than 2012. Just as a team that has demonstrated capability previously will often return to that level after laying an egg, so should a player, given raw talent, competitive drive and in Price s case, a rehabilitated offensive line.
Partly because of not buying into Price, the magazines aren t especially bullish on Washington, which probably suits the Huskies just fine. Lynne, I’m tired of America’s interference in places like Egypt. Americans don’t get this. We’re used to being No. 1, the top dog, the people who get to manage the Earth. But we don’t have a right to that authority; we have let the academics and politicians who itch for the joys of global management talk us into believing we have a moral duty to do it. Foreigners think Americans do it because there is profit in it. Sometimes there is, but there are also losses.
To my understanding, Egypt has been the No. 1 recipient of U.S. government aid, or No. 2 after Israel, since the Jimmy Carter administration. What benefit did the U.S. taxpayer get for that? That Egypt didn’t attack Israel? Last time Egypt attacked Israel, in 1973, the Egyptian army had its pants pulled down. Also, Israel has nuclear weapons. I could be totally mistaken, but I’ll hazard to assert that Egypt does not need to be bribed to let Israel alone.
And if it did, who should pay that bribe, eh?
Look at where this aid gets Americans. Our government underwrites Egypt’s military. Egypt has an election: Democracy! Yay! Arab Spring! Whoopee! The Muslim Brotherhood is elected to power, promising to have an inclusive government. Well, it lied. It isn’t inclusive. It demonizes its opponents as traitors. Three years in, Egyptians don’t want that government any more. Egypt’s military, with all its U.S. tanks and guns, takes over in a coup.
What happened is all the valuable influence bought by U.S. aid? The New York Times reports frustration at the White House because of “lack of leverage the United States has over Egypt.”
Our ambassador there, Anne Patterson, an official almost no American has heard of, is a huge public figure in Egypt, her face on signs, crossed out as if she were Satan. Says the New York Times, she is “a symbol for angry young Egyptians of America’s meddlesome role in their country’s affairs.”
Has the U.S. government been meddlesome? Yup.
And what is the U.S. government’s attitude toward the coup? We’re Americans. We don’t believe in military coups. We believe in elections, and civilian government. Ambassador Patterson said she was “deeply skeptical” that “street action will produce better results than elections.” As an American, what else could she say? That put her against the people in the street. But the U.S. government was also deeply skeptical of the Muslim Brotherhood government,[http://www.cheapsalejerseys.com/dallas-cowboys-c-598_641 Cheap Dallas Cowboys Jerseys on sale], because it was run by zealots who didn’t like liberty or democracy or United States.
Result: The U.S. ambassador's face is crossed out by both sides.
The goal of U.S. foreign policy should be the advancement of the legitimate interests of the United States. To me that means the protection of American citizens in Egypt, and in the neighborhood of Egypt, and of some rules for trade, investment, intellectual property, fishing rights, tourism, educational exchanges, extradition, etc., between Egypt and the United States. Our government has taken a much more vague and permissive view of what American interests are in Egypt and other places, and what sorts of things our politicians, and our military, are allowed to do in pursuit of these amorphous interests.
People with power like to use it, and will embrace political language that allows them to do what they want.
One of those chocolate bars of permissive language is “nation-building.” I don’t think it is part of the U.S. government’s job to go around the world building nations. I’m just a narrow-minded isolationist that way, Lynne. I look at this and think, “not our business.” ?We didn’t like it when the British were nation-building here, with their taxes and their redcoats, and we killed a bunch of them back in the 1770s and 1780s until they left us alone. It was a glorious thing, and last Thursday we celebrated it with fireworks. We wanted the British, and all the other European powers, out.
Should we be surprised that the Egyptians want the American government out? I’d want it out, if I were Egyptian.
I remember when the Philippines closed the U.S. bases at Clark Field and Subic Bay. They wanted the Americans out, not because they hated America (they don’t) or hated democracy (they don’t), but because it was their country and they didn’t want the former imperial power interfering with their politics (which we did). They kicked us out, and see if you can find a Filipino who regrets it.</html>

For Saunders, he s not as far along in that this really represents a few better-hitting games for him. But he used his power and speed tonight and the Mariners will take both those things anyplace they can find it.

The court of honor was called to order by Unit Commissioner, Kevin Thomson, and the posting of the colors (old glory and the unit flag) was accomplished by the brothers of Jacob and Micah: Cole Dorsten, Anthony Dorsten and Talon Sullivan. The program benediction was offered by Jacob s grandmother, Sherry Kemp, and the colors were retired before dismissing the court to enjoy an abundance of cake, cookies, fruit, vegetables and other treats washed down with fruit drink.

When asked what he had learned along the trail to Eagle, Jacob Dorsten replied, Push younger scouts to make it all the way to Eagle. Jacob s mom, Anna Dorsten, was quick to add (with a mother s smile of pride for her oldest son on her face), He s only taking three merit badges at summer camp this year so he can help younger scouts with theirs. He just needs to make sure he completes his three. 

When asked what he thought of his son obtaining the rank of Eagle, Scott Dorsten responded with a big smile and a short, yet resounding sentence, I m proud of him. 

Micah Sullivan s response to what he had learned along the trail to Eagle was Leadership: capturing people s attention, being able to express what you are trying to say to your peers and implementing what you teach to others in your life. 

When asked what she thought of her son obtaining the rank of Eagle, Katie Sullivan replied thoughtfully, That s a twofold answer. I look back and see the struggles it took, but the other side of it is that he stuck with it and overcame those struggles. I m just proud of him. When asked the same question at a different time, Bruce Sullivan, Micah s dad echoed his wife Katie stating, I m just proud of him. It was a lot of work and I m glad he stuck with it.

SCOTT:&nbsp;That was the president earlier this month trying to convince Americans his administration is doing all it can to be transparent in regard to the NSA collection of data. This week, a 2011 declassified report was released. It shows that the agency scooped up as many as 56,000 e-mails and other communications from Americans with no connection to terrorism. The report also included the opinions from the then chief judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance court. Judge John Bates writing, "For the first time, the government has now advised the court that the volume and nature of the information it has been collecting is fundamentally different from what the court had been led to believe."

Media reaction to all of the new details about the NSA's spying has been mixed. Although some in the press are beginning to turn up the heat. Questioning what the president and his administration are telling us. Jeff Jarvis at The Guardian writes -- "The punch line of the Snowden affair, when we can't trust what government tells us we come to trust those who government doesn't trust. Thus we no longer necessarily care what the official line is. And who delivers it. And when that happens, access, the currency of the beltway becomes worthless. Ah, the irony."

So, Jim, this report was out. It was prepared, I should say, before the president made those comments and before the president made some changes to the way the NSA operates.

JIM PINKERTON, THE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE MAGAZINE:&nbsp;Right.

SCOTT:&nbsp;So, should we trust everything now .

PINKERTON:&nbsp;The old joke, we are going to hear from the government to help you - protect you, it's - it's - look, Peggy Noonan wrote a terrific column on Friday, in which she said that the net result of all this is to turn Americans into, quote, solemnly paranoid in terms of this - fatalism -- no, I think they might be angry - angry as well. But look, this -- if I were the president I would just stop making statements that seem to be undercut by his own actions a week or two later.

SCOTT:&nbsp;What about the mainstream media coverage? It seems to have sort of -- dismissed this scandal, Judy?

JUDY MILLER, WRITER FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: I don't think it did. I think The Wall Street Journal and "The New York Times" stories on the NSA ruling that -- you know, the 2011 ruling that we were just talking about, really raises some profound questions about whether or not these are just kind of accidental whoopses in the system or there was a policy, which was unconstitutional. I don't -- I don't think that that means -- I think that indicates the media are finally taking this story very seriously. And that the -- trust me is being replaced by the - trust, but verified mantra of President Reagan. The media should be upset.

SCOTT:&nbsp;And Rick, we have been told that this is all supervised by the FISA court, Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act court. But the chief judge at the time said hey, they were pulling the wool over our eyes here.

RICK GRENELL, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR:&nbsp;Yeah. There's really been problems all the way around. You will notice that the U.S. media is really beginning to say that this is about the U.S. government or our government. They are really not fingering Obama on this. However, there is a piece in the Atlantic this week by Philip Bump and he points out that President Obama's independent review board is not independent at all. And I think what we are seeing week is a real unraveling where the media are only beginning to say this is Obama's fault,[http://www.wzntj.com/home.php?mod=space&uid=90338 ], not just the U.S. government or the government.

SCOTT:&nbsp;And then there was sort of a side media story this week. Glenn Greenwald, the reporter who along with Edward Snowden, broke the story of the NSA surveillance. His partner, guy named David Miranda, was detained by British officials for nine hours on a -- terrorism charge of some sort. And some of his personal property was seized. Any reaction from the media?

KIRSTEN POWERS, DAILY BEAST COLUMNIST USA TODAY CONTRIBUTOR: Well, I mean, I think that there's everybody - pretty much was horrified by this. I don't think Obama has the media on his side on this issue, particularly because they've targeted the media, so that worked against them from the beginning. But the Glenn Greenwald thing was completely outrageous, because he was held for nine hours, which under the law, in which they were holding him, you can hold somebody up to nine hours. They literally kept him as long as you possible could,[http://www.cheapsalejerseys.com/dallas-cowboys-c-598_641 Cheap Dallas Cowboys Jerseys on sale], he hasn't done anything other than being - in a relationship with Glenn Greenwald who is a journalist and is allowed to do what he is doing. So, and then it was reported that the United States knew ahead of time that this was going to happen, so, you know, the administration should be held accountable for this.

SCOTT:&nbsp;But then Greenwald's reaction was interesting, Cal. He says, "I will be far more aggressive in my reporting from now on, I'm going to publish many more documents. I'm going to publish things on England, too. I have many documents on England's spy system. I think they will be sorry for what they did." Now, is that what a journalist is supposed to do?

CAL THOMAS, SYNDICATED COLUMNIST:&nbsp;Well, yes and no. But the International Herald Tribune this week had a front page story about this,[http://www.cheapsalejerseys.com/nfl-jerseys-c-598 Hot Sale 2013 Latest NFL Jerseys], and they interviewed Alan Rusbridger, the editor of The Guardian, and he made a very valid point. I think, he said -- our laws in Britain are different than American laws regarding journalists. As - Kirsten said, they interrogated this guy, this partner of Greenwald for nine hours. Now, this is just amazing. I mean, where do you go from there?

PINKERTON:&nbsp;Right. The -- interesting question is what -- connection this had back to the U.S. government. I mean, there's not been a lot of energetic reporting show and say, on whether -- how far in advance they knew about this. Whether the White House - the White House (inaudible). Yeah, we knew about it. We've got a heads-up. Well, that's not actually not quite the way it works in this Intel business.

MILLER:&nbsp;Under British law, they can hold someone for nine hours. What they -- Brits said was that Mr. Miranda was carrying stolen information. And they were holding him under the terrorism act. Now, we can quibble about whether or not that was the proper vehicle of law to hold him under, but he was acting as Glenn Greenwald's mule is what the British government alleged and that argument wasn't really made or heard well here in the United States.

PINKERTON:&nbsp;Is it by Jeffrey Toobin at CNN who repeated it verbatim?

POWERS:&nbsp;Yeah. I think it (inaudible). And I don't think -- I mean, his partner also works with him in the -- on his journalism. And so, I think that he has the same - should have the same protection as him .

GRENELL:&nbsp;Well, that's the poor argument, Kirsten.

POWERS:&nbsp;- No, it's not.

GRENELL:&nbsp;I think that's a really poor argument because Glenn Greenwald gave this information to a non-journalist. I don't care if they were married or if they are partners. The simple fact is that he gave it to a non-journalist. You completely give up your ability to say .

POWERS:&nbsp;How was - if he is working with Glenn on his journalism, he is not a non-journalist .

Running my Predictions on the 2012 Home Run Derby

Partially by analyzing statistics, and mostly by a huge amount of luck, I correctly predicted to win the 2013 Home Run Derby. . HR were chosen from the first half of the season, while all of the other stats were chosen from the entire 2012 season because those were the only stats available to me. The bottom table shows how many points a batter gained or lost per each stat category, then their total overall score. A higher score corresponds to a better finishing position. At the time this was created, there were about 15 minutes until derby time. I decided that these weights had to do, there was no time for tinkering, and I moved on.

I picked first and last correctly. Good enough to make me seem somewhat smart. Also, it s very interesting to see how the differences between Predicted and Actual Place mirror exactly. 0, 4, 1, 3, 3, 1, 4, 0. I ll look into that. It s either a huge coincidence, or a sign that I m onto something.

I then proceeded to take down statistics for the actual Home Run Derby. <html>WASHINGTON (AP) ― Driving in America has stalled, leading researchers to ask: Is the national love affair with the automobile over?

After rising for decades, total vehicle use in the U.S. ― the collective miles people drive ― peaked in August 2007. It then dropped sharply during the Great Recession and has largely plateaued since, even though the economy is recovering and the population growing. Even more telling, the average miles drivers individually rack up peaked in July 2004 at just over 900 per month, said a study by  economists  and David Pace. By July of last year, that had fallen to 820 miles per month, down about 9 percent. Per capita automobile use is now back at the same levels as in the late 1990s.

Until the mid-1990s, driving levels largely tracked economic growth, according to Pickrell and Pace, who said their conclusions are their own and not the government's. Since then, the economy has grown more rapidly than auto use. Gross domestic product declined for a while during the recession but reversed course in 2009. Auto use has yet to recover.

Meanwhile, the share of people in their teens, 20s and 30s with driver's licenses has been dropping significantly, suggesting that getting a driver's license is no longer the teenage rite of passage it once was.

Researchers are divided on the reasons behind the trends. One camp says the changes are almost entirely linked to the economy. In a few years, as the economy continues to recover, driving will probably bounce back, they reason. At the same time, they acknowledge there could be long-term structural changes in the economy that would prevent a return to the levels of driving growth seen in the past; it's just too soon to know.

The other camp acknowledges that economic factors are important but says the decline in driving also reflects fundamental changes in the way Americans view the automobile. For commuters stuck in traffic, getting into a car no longer correlates with fun. It's also becoming more of a headache to own a car in central cities and downright difficult to park.

"The idea that the car means freedom, I think, is over," said travel behavior analyst .

Gone are the days of the car culture as immortalized in songs like "Hot Rod Lincoln," ''Little Deuce Coupe" and "Pink Cadillac."

"The car as a fetish of masculinity is probably over for certain age groups," McGuckin said. "I don't think young men care as much about the car they drive as they use to."

That's partly because cars have morphed into computers on wheels that few people dare tinker with, she said. "You can't open the hood and get to know it the way you used to," she said.

Lifestyles are also changing. People are doing more of their shopping online. More people are taking public transit than ever before. And biking and walking to work and for recreation are on the rise.

Social networking online may also be substituting for some trips. A study by University of Michigan transportation researcher  found that the decline in teens and young adults with driver's licenses in the U.S. was mirrored in other wealthy countries with a high proportion of Internet users.

Demographic changes are also a factor. The peak driving years for most people are between ages 45 and 55 when they are the height of their careers and have more money to spend, said transportation analyst , author of "Commuting in America." Now, the last of the baby boomers ― the giant cohort born between 1946 and 1964 ― are moving out of their peak driving years.

"They are still the dominant players, and they are moving toward a quieter transportation lifestyle," he said.

There's also a driving gender gap. In a role reversal, there are now more women than men in the U.S. with driver's licenses. And the declines in miles driven over the past decade were more widespread among men than women, according to Pickrell and Pace. Driving by men has declined in every age group except those 65 or older, where it increased slightly. Among women, driving declined only among young adults and teenagers.

There are several economic factors that help explain the trends. But average automobile use has declined recently even among those who have remained employed.

Economists say many Americans, especially teens and young adults, are finding that buying and owning a car stretches their financial resources. The average price of a new car is $31,000, according to the industry-aligned  in Ann Arbor, Mich.

"We're not selling to everyone. We're selling to upper-middle class to upper class," said , the center's chief economist. The share of younger workers who can find jobs is at an especially low ebb, while the cost of a college education ― and with it student loans ― is soaring. Many schools have stopped offering free driver's education to students. Owning a car is increasingly beyond the reach of many young drivers, researchers said.

Research by the  found that 18- to 20-year-olds were three times more likely to have a driver's license if they lived in a household with an annual income above $100,000 than if they lived in a household with an income below $20,000.

"I don't think it's a change in people's preferences. I think it's all economics," McAlinden said. "It might last if the economics stay the same. But if they improve, I think people will come back to driving more. ... Give a person a good job 25 miles away and they'll be at the dealership the next morning."

The decline in driving has important public policy implications. Among the potential benefits are less pollution, less dependence on foreign oil, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and fewer fatalities and injuries. But less driving also means less federal and state gas tax revenues, further reducing funds already in short supply for both highway and transit improvements. On the other hand, less driving may also mean less traffic congestion, although the impact on congestion may vary regionally.

Phineas Baxandall, senior analyst for the liberal U.S. Public Interest Research Group, says driving declines mean transportation dollars could be put to other uses.

"You just don't want to spend money you don't have for highways you don't need," he said.

== Russian GDP Discrepancies ==

However, if you're looking for suspect data, check out the situation in Russia.

Now Russia is going through the same economic turmoil as its fellow BRICs (and more broadly, all emerging markets). Russia's massive growth before and right after the global economic crisis allowed the country to ignore structural issues that are now proving to be problematic.

But economists are alarmed at the unreliability of the data.

On Aug. 22, Nomura strategists Olgay Buyukkayali and Dmitri Petrov kicked off a multi-volume report on Russia's weakening economy by noting how poor the official data quality is.

They wrote:

The errors puzzle in the breakdown

Russian growth contains some puzzles. The first is in the expenditures contribution. Q1 growth was 1.6% y-o-y, and statistical discrepancy contributed up to 1.8% on the upside. At this stage the official breakdown of Q2 GDP contributions is not yet available. However, this is not an issue as last quarter s Rosstat GDP data asked more questions than it answered. If one adds up the contributions of the expenditure components to Q1 GDP,[http://bbs.popwan.com/home.php?mod=space&uid=895328 ], the resulting figure of 0.6% is noticeably lower than 1.6% headline growth. For statistical reasons, the discrepancy is not unusual, but in this particular case it seems that Rosstat cannot figure out where the growth is coming from.
