 Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu was national chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party. He was among the initiators of the All Progressives Congress, a merger of three former political parties, ANPP, Action Congress of Nigeria, and Congress for Progressive Change, as well as factions of All Progressives Grand Alliance and Democratic Peoples Party. In this interview with Onyebuchi Ezigbo, Onu speaks on the coming of APC and its plans and objectives going forward. Excerpts:

 <br>
 Could you recount your experience during the negotiations for the All Progressives Congress merger?&nbsp;<br>
 I never had issues with anyone; it was a very peaceful process. Our party never had any crisis, except the ones we inherited from the previous leadership before I came on board. But we were able to sort out these issues just in good time before embarking on the merger. We adhered strictly to the provisions of our constitution. For the merger negotiations, we were able to carry everybody along. It was true that quite a number of people outside tended to say, oh, because of the past issues in ANPP there will be problem if the party joins the merger. But I kept assuring them that what we had was the new ANPP and that the new party leadership should be trusted and that we have done everything possible to merit that trust. We played very important role in making sure that the merger pulled through.<br>
 <br>
 What was the most challenging stage of the merger process?<br>
 The most challenging aspect of the merger, I think for the three political parties, was the effort to make sure that all members of the parties agreed to drop their identities. This is why the merger is unique and very difficult. Whereas you can have alliance, whereby you can work together and at any time you do not like to continue, you break it and still be on your own.&nbsp; But in merger, you are giving your identity and all those who hold party positions will give them up. So you can see that it is not an easy decision to make. So that was the most important challenge that we had, but we are grateful that we surmounted it, while carrying everybody along. Our conventions were very successful as witnessed by INEC.<br>
 <br>
 What can APC do to prove wrong the wide insinuation that the choice of a presidential candidate ahead of 2015 would make or mar the party?<br>
 I would like to address the issue by saying that in the process of applying for registration at INEC, APC went through a lot of challenges.&nbsp; Many Nigerians did not give it a chance but I can understand their fears; based on historical experience this has not happened before, for parties to agree to lose their identities. But God has been with us and we have been overcoming these challenges one after another until, finally, we were registered. So I think that the issue of electing our presidential candidate will be handled in a way for us to win the election. Do not forget we will be contesting against the ruling party. We must do all in our capacity to ensure that the candidate we choose will be able to match that of the PDP. I am very optimistic that we will overcome the challenge.<br>
 <br>
 Are you confident that APC would choose its candidate through a truly democratic process?<br>
 APC has a constitution, which INEC requested for as many as 35 copies and I believe that we are expected to abide by that constitution.&nbsp; We are happy that our constitution is very detailed. By adhering strictly to it, there will be no problems. If you look at APC now, the party has a constitution which INEC requested for during our registration and I believe we will abide by that constitution. I do not foresee any problem in doing that.&nbsp; Remember that while I was the national chairman of ANPP the emergence of our presidential candidate in 2011 was very smooth and peaceful.&nbsp; The reason was that we adhered strictly to the spirit and letter of our constitution and I would suggest that everything should be done to ensure that the will of the people is allowed to determine the presidential candidate.&nbsp; So nobody complained about the process. If the process is clean and is in accordance with the constitution of the party, those who lose will be able to accept the outcome and congratulate the winner. This is what I pray should happen in APC.&nbsp; Let us not be thinking about what happened in the past within the three parties. We should be looking at the present and the future and the important thing is that we are resolved to ensure that the emergence of the flag bearer of APC will reflect the will of the majority of party members and the interest of Nigerians.<br>
 <br>
 How would you explain the crisis that trailed the formation of APC s interim national leadership?<br>
 I will say that so many people made important contributions in the course of the negotiations for the merger.&nbsp; Many persons at all levels also contributed to make the merger successful. For some of us, I believed that God used us to start the process that led to the merger. You remember that in the past, similar efforts that were made to have an alliance never worked, but this particular one became successful. I will in all humility thank God for using my person to start it by seeking audience with the leadership of ACN.&nbsp; It was that initial interaction we had shortly after I became the national chairman of ANPP that resulted in what we now have as APC.&nbsp; After that initial meeting, we then realised that time was not on our side and immediately after the matters revolving around the 2011 general elections were dispensed, I again initiated the unification talks and everyone among us embraced it. But while this was going on, there was no time I nursed the ambition that at the end of the day, I will be made the national chairman of the party. And when we got to the stage of sharing out interim offices, we were guided by the requirement of the electoral law, which states that a party must derive its membership from at least two-third of the states. In doing so, we decided to have 25 or more national officers, which was enshrined in our constitution.&nbsp; We then proceeded to share the positions nine each among the three parties that applied for merger.&nbsp; It was shared nine each and then the remaining eight slots were shared between APGA and DPP groups in the merger. In determining who got what position, we decided that ACN, which has six states under its control, should produce the interim national chairman and eight other slots. ANPP with three states got the national secretary position along with eight other offices, while CPC was allotted the national treasurer seat with additional eight slots.<br>

 What is your ambition in APC,[http://wiki.mathenary.com/index.php/%EC%82%AC%EC%9A%A9%EC%9E%90:Llbiedihsqu#Kansas_City_Chiefs_53 Kansas City Chiefs 53]?<br>
 I cannot talk about the future, but for now, my desire is to make APC a very strong party that Nigerians can see as a real alternative to the ruling party. A party that has the capacity to govern, a party that can be trusted and one that Nigerians will be able to say, yes, we have tried the ruling party for the past 14 years, now let us try APC.&nbsp; So my current ambition is to do all I can to assist the interim leadership to see that all is done to build the APC to the level that it can produce the next leadership for the country.<br>
 <br>
 How would you assess the support APC among your native Igbo people? Do you think APC is a veritable platform for the realisation of the dream among some Igbo to have one of their own as Nigerian president in 2015?<br>
 The Igbo are reacting positively to the formation of APC and Nigerians and all those who reside in the country believe very strongly that it is not good for us to put our eggs in one basket.&nbsp; APC offers us an opportunity to stir our nation into a strong, peaceful and prosperous country.&nbsp; So our advice remains that the Igbo should not put all their eggs into one basket and that all Nigerians should embrace APC. Indeed, many people are showing interest in joining the new party, but do not forget that the party has just been registered.<br>
 <br>
 Would you contest for the APC presidential ticket?<br>
 No, the issue of presidential ticket or one s ambition is not before us now. We all know that election may be held sometime in 2014, subject to the conclusion of the ongoing amendment in the Electoral Law. I believe that until that happens it is not ripe to talk about ambitions. But I think, definitely, the Igbo, like any other group that make up this great country, have the constitutional right to run for the presidency in 2015. And I think that APC is the appropriate party with the national spread to enable the Igbo to actualise their dreams. I think APC offers the Igbo a very wonderful opportunity, even if it is not realised now, there is nothing bad in our making the attempt and then see if we can actualise that in the future.<br>
 <br>
 What would you consider your greatest achievement as ANPP national chairman?<br>
 I would not like to be the one to rate my performance in ANPP. I will rather prefer that other people do that.&nbsp; We met an ANPP that was almost polarised by internal squabbles, however, by the grace of God as we were leaving, we had a party that was united without any factions.&nbsp; It is very difficult to find any other political party in the country without factions. In ANPP, virtually all the key leaders of the party were intact both at the national and zonal levels. Some prominent politicians were coming back to the party on daily basis. Not one person left the party again, instead people were coming back to join us. Also we discovered that the&nbsp; working relationship we had with the ruling party was creating a lot of problems up to a point that some of the members who were given appointments by the federal government resigned from the party to join PDP. The situation brought about an identity crisis for ANPP and in the eyes of the public, they were not sure whether it was ANPP or whether we were an extension of the ruling party. So we needed to immediately pull back with the support of majority of the party members. We are happy that we achieved that and gave ANPP an identity as a party that now stood on its own to the extent that nobody ever thought that the party was an extension of PDP. We had also played a very important role to get APC registered. There are quite a number of achievements, but like I said, it is left for people to do the rest of the assessment.<br>
 <br>
 What is your reaction to the allegation in some quarters that APC is peopled by old politicians and offers nothing unique in terms of ideology and manifesto?<br>
 APC has put together a very good ideology and manifesto. INEC has a copy and also the constitution of the party is very unique for so many reasons. For instance, this is the only party in the country that has leadership structures at the local, ward and polling unit levels.<br>
 Let me address this issue of strange bed fellows. The Alliance for Democracy and All Peoples Party, for those who are conversant with the genesis of these parties, would have been been one party. But as APP was to be presented to the public at the Old Parade Ground then, our brothers from the South-west left to form the AD. So you can see that the merging of the parties is something that would have happened as at 1998. And let me also point out something that many people may not easily remember. When the three parties ACN, CPC and ANPP formed their merger committees, Chief Tom Ikimi, who was a foundation member of the then APP, was chairman of the ANPP merger committee. There was Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, former Kano State governor on the platform of ANPP, and then the CPC merger committee chairman, Alhaji Garba Gadi, was the deputy governor of Bauchi State under the ANPP. So you can see that there is no justification for anyone saying that these people are incompatible. We are compatible and the manifesto of APC reflects that compatibility.<br>
 It is not true also that key promoters of APC are not compatible. For example, Senator Bola Tinubu, a great Nigerian, a two-term governor of Lagos State, was a foundation member of AD, a party that would have been united with APP if not for the last minute changes that saw them registering as separate entities. Now, General Muhammed Buhari, a former Head of State and another great Nigerian, he ran on the platform of ANPP on two occasions.&nbsp; Senator Ali Modu Sheriff was also a two-term governor of Borno State on the platform of ANPP. All these people are important in the emergence of the APC.&nbsp; In APC, we have so many important personalities and we treat everybody with respect. We accord all with the honour they deserve.&nbsp; All of them are very experienced both in politics and governance in the country.<br>

 Would you subscribe to the adoption of zoning or consensus in the selection of APC s candidates?<br>
 Our position is very clear.&nbsp; By accepting zoning we want to ensure that every part of the country is accommodated and that none is left out in the scheme of things. That every part of country is given a sense of belonging in the affairs of the party. So it is not even only for elective positions, in every appointive position, the issue of equity and balance will always prevail.&nbsp; This will ensure that all are given a sense of belonging. Even our consitution has provisions on how to ensure balance in the sharing of positions in the party so that everybody will feel a sense of belonging. Secondly, the APC as constituted now is the only party that can say that it is truly a national party.&nbsp; This is because we are presently controlling at least a state in each of the six geographical zones of the country. The ruling PDP as at now, even though they have more states, they are not national in the true sense of it because it does not have any state under its control in the South-west.&nbsp; Because of the national outlook of APC we must be very careful how we handle issues.<br>
 <br>
 How would you react to the labeling of APC as a Muslim party in some quarters because of the perceived domination of its interim management committee by Muslims?<br>
 In constituting the interim management committee, we had to do this to meet the requirement of INEC for registration and we shared it to all the parties and then the parties went and selected those that would fill their slots. So you can see there was no ulterior motive in how it was done. If there had been an election and people campaigned for some time, such things as religious bias would not have arisen. But in terms of balancing, out of 35 positions, we have 18 as Muslims and 17 as Christians.  How would you rate the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan in the last two years?<br>
 For most of us in APC, we are not looking at just the performance of President Goodluck Jonathan in the last two years but we are talking about the state of affairs since the past 14 years of PDP leadership as a whole. We know what the situation has been and currently, our country may not be at war, yet peace has eluded us. We have a problem of high unemployment rate and we are told the economy is buoyant and yet no jobs for our teaming youths. We see ourselves as a consuming nation with essentially just one product for export.
