== Russell Wilson hosts passing academy in Seattle ==

<html>Russell Wilson began the final leg of the Russell Wilson Passing Academy football camp for young players on Saturday at the University of Washington. About 300 campers formed a line early Saturday morning, many wearing Russell Wilson jerseys.
I ve covered a lot of these camps put on by college or professional athletes before, and I have to say that Wilson s was one of the smoothest run that I ve been to. As one parent said at the end of the day,[http://www.runnerforever.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=706016 Community Calendar_0], Would you expect any different from him? Wilson was heavily involved throughout the day, bouncing between each of the different stations and conducting the quarterback session with Warren Moon. How about that for a combo to learn from, even if only for 20 or 30 minutes?
I ll get into this more down the road, but it s amazing to me the way people react to Wilson. The simple act of getting their picture taken with him or getting his signature legitimately seemed to make some peoples days. I could be making too much of that, but that s the way it seemed to me, and I watched him sign and take a lot of pictures over the course of five hours or so.

In the first game, Bowling Green s Brandon Martin delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning to bring in his team s only runs as Hot Rods edged the Dragons 2-1.

Dayton finished the night at 6-8 in the second half while Bowling Green is now 9-5. As Microsoft opens its annual Worldwide Partner Conference this week, it s a good time to ask: How is Microsoft doing in its relationships with its 640,000 partners? And what role might the partners play as Microsoft transforms itself into a devices-and-services company?
I asked the CEOs of? two locally based companies for their perspectives.
Birger Steen is a former Microsof exec and current CEO of Renton-based Parallels, which offers virtualization and automation software.
Majdi Daher is CEO of Redmond-based Denali Advanced Integration, an IT services and solutions provider.
Both will have teams from their companies at this year s WPC, which opened Sunday and runs through Thursday in Houston. About 16,000 people, representing resellers, consultants, systems integrators, developers and others who have built businesses based on Microsoft platforms and services, are expected at this year s conference where they ll get updates on Microsoft s roadmaps for the year ahead, and have opportunities to network.

Steen says that in the last seven or so years that Parallels has been working closely with Microsoft, this year stands out for Microsoft having an unequivocally partner-centric and partner-friendly strategy,[http://wiki.milko.3mhz.net/spamwiki/index.php/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B1%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BB:Mkengefqyl#Morning_links-_UW.E2.80.99s_Keith_Price.2C_Bishop_Sankey_named_t Morning links- UW’s Keith Price, Bishop Sankey named t], especially regarding its cloud offerings.
In the past three years, as Microsoft has become dead serious about the cloud, Steen believes, its approach has been to go directly to customers with its cloud offerings rather than try to leverage its partners.
That s in line with other companies who also thought the emergence of the cloud, as a separate business model,[http://freesoftware.infodocs.eu/index.php?title=Utilisateur:Mmpxywvwlg#Dutch_Lions_continue_win_streak_0 Dutch Lions continue win streak 0], meant that they could serve customers directly and eliminate intermediatries, Steen says.
 I think it s taken a bit of time to realize that these intermediaries resellers, integraters, support (people) are the ones who make sense of IT for small businesses and end users, he said.
In the past year, Microsoft has focused more on making use of and sharing of the cloud with partner resources, Steen said.
Indeed, Parallels is unveiling today support for a Microsoft Azure Pack for Hosting Providers, which it developed in collaboration with Microsoft, as well as updates to several of its cloud service delivery offerings.
 In the years we ve worked with Microsoft at Parallels, we ve never seen such a consistent partner-friendly approach across all of Microsoft s businesses, Steen said.

On the other hand, Majdi Daher, CEO of Denali Advanced Integration, says there s been a lot of uncertainty and lack of clarity coming from Microsoft lately. In addition, he believes, there is not a consistent strategy to go to partners and say: Let s drive value with partners and our portfolio. 
For instance, Microsoft earlier this month launched a program that allows business buyers to purchase Surface tablets and commercial services through authorized resellers. But the companies named by Microsoft as the initial group of resellers are all large-account resellers, not value-added resellers such as Denali that add their own services or solutions to Microsoft s offerings.
 I m disappointed, Daher said.
Letting the large resellers sell Surface is a good first step in opening up the various channels from which businesses can buy Surface,[http://sociallearnlab.org/sixiu/index.php?title=%E7%94%A8%E6%88%B7:Mevcsqigon#With_tinkering.2C_3D_printing_can_push_limits_1 With tinkering, 3D printing can push limits 1], Daher said. (It was previously only sold through Microsoft retail or online stores or through big-box stores such as Best Buy or Staples.)
But that s too little an effort, Daher said. It needs to be opened up, with a clearly defined program that invites partners who want to engage. 
Microsoft said the program is only in its first phase and that the company plans to sign up more resellers in more countries in the coming months.
For Daher, it all points to a larger issue of lack of clarity in what Microsoft tells its partners about how to qualify to sell certain Microsoft products.
Microsoft is pretty clear on some things,[http://taoc.dk/wiki/index.php/Bruger:Moczsakzal#Dutch_Lady_Lions_playing_well_0 Dutch Lady Lions playing well 0], including making sure engineers in companies such as Denali understand products such as Windows Azure or System Center, he said.
But Microsoft is unclear on others,? including what resellers need to do in order to be able to resell mobile devices such as Windows Phone, Windows RT tablets, and the Surface Pro and Surface RT tablets, Daher believes.
 It is concerning to us to see a great product like Windows 8 not making the headway that it should be making, he said. I really believe the reason it s not getting the traction it should is because Microsoft did not go to partners like us and say: Let s figure out how to deliver the Windows 8 experience to your customers. Microsoft has been trying to do that all on its own. 
It s a lost opportunity for Microsoft since it s the value-added resellers who advise their business customers on which operating system to use, whether it s Windows 8, Windows? RT, iOS or Android, Daher said.
But, he added, I think Microsoft will eventually get it right.</html>

== Analysts question Microsoft app plans, silent on re ==

<html>SAN FRANCISCO _ Nobody mentioned the elephants in the room at Microsoft s subdued meeting with financial analysts today.
Perhaps the 30 or so analysts didn t want to rock the boat now that Microsoft stock has finally perked back up, rising 26 percent so far this year.
But during the analyst meeting held during its Build developer conference, nobody brought up  who may be hoping to shake-up Microsoft s board of directors and perhaps spin off the Bing or Xbox groups.
Nor did anyone mention  of the company s leadership, which could lead to changes in how the company reports earnings for different business units.
Instead, analysts peppered Steven Guggs Guggenheimer, vice president of the company s developer and evangelism group, with questions mostly?about how the company can attract more developers and better compete against Apple and Google on mobile devices.
After a somewhat cool initial reception, Windows 8 is warming up with developers, Guggenheimer told the analysts. He said they ve?gone from lean back to lean in conversation about developing apps for Microsoft s platform.
 Right now it��s a lean-in conversation, he said. The conversation��s gone from if to when and in some cases how.��
Microsoft s?annual financial analyst meeting referred to as FAM used to be a gala event on?the Redmond?campus that ended with cocktails and analysts crowding around Ballmer, Bill Gates and other top executives. In recent years it morphed into low-key receptions held concurrent with big Microsoft conference.
This year, FAM?was an unpublicized,?hour-long session in a windowless room in the basement of Moscone Center, with Guggenheimer sitting akimbo on stage with his lieutenant, Microsoft Technical Fellow John Shewchuk.
Here s a heavily edited selection from the exchange:

Q: Apple��s iOS and Google��s Android have huge momentum. What strengths does Microsoft have and how is it advancing?
Guggs: Microsoft addresses this question with app developers in several ways.
��People care about the number of devices,[http://weedpedia.org/index.php?title=Usu%C3%A1rio:Mlngctdryz#Morning_links-_UW.E2.80.99s_Keith_Price.2C_Bishop_Sankey_named_t Morning links- UW’s Keith Price, Bishop Sankey named t], or have confidence you��re going to be shipping more devices �� hundreds of millions of PCs will ship this year and sometimes we lose track of that,�� he said.
Microsoft also pitches its ��common core.�� Windows Phones and PCs have a common core that makes it easier to develop apps for both platforms ��it��s not exactly the same �� but you have a good starting point,�� he said.
The platform is richer, with common user experiences on phones, tablets and PCs; a variety of interfaces and Windows 8 features such as the ��charm�� controls for search and sharing.
Apple��s iOS ��doesn��t bridge experience across phone, tablet and their PC �C Android doesn��t really have a PC,�� he said.
Microsoft also offers more flexibility in its commerce platform,[http://wiki.comunidadhuayra.org/Usuario:Mznfzqpeob#Indiana_couple_has_moved_to_Xenia_because_of_quality.2C_proxim Indiana couple has moved to Xenia because of quality, proxim], with a sliding scale for sharing app store revenue, for instance, and improvements in app store merchandising that were highlighted during the morning keynote.
Q: What is Microsoft doing to encourage enterprises to build business apps? Is it taking advantage of its strength in enterprise computing?
Guggs: Big companies don��t necessarily want to turn their internal programs into apps.
��Very few companies who have a decent amount of code or apps �C they don��t want to throw it out and replace it,�� he said.
Microsoft is offering them ways to develop programs that run online in the cloud, or span internal and cloud infrastructure or move back and forth, he noted.
The company is now ��tuning�� its enterprise sales to press harder on services and apps,[http://hoku-ei.sakura.ne.jp/wiki/%E5%88%A9%E7%94%A8%E8%80%85:Mafrnmdplt#Reign_FC_beats_Western_New_York_Flash.2C_extends_unbeaten_stre Reign FC beats Western New York Flash, extends unbeaten stre], in addition to traditional business products.

Q: What incentive is there for developers to write for new Windows 8 interface, when they have apps that work in old interface?
Guggs: ��That new UI is a great user experience, especially with touch �� To be fair, it goes app by and app and it depends on what they��re trying to do.��
Still, Windows 8 is far off for many big companies that are still moving to Windows 7.
��The number one conversation we have today truthfully is, if you have a lot of XP apps, let��s get them to 7 apps,[http://www.katzen-lexikon.de/Benutzer:Mdeeunajla#Heading_to_the_islands-_Pick_up_some_farm Heading to the islands- Pick up some farm],�� he said. ��We sort of have that ��let��s get to the right point�� conversation.��
Q: ?Windows 8 enables developers to write apps in JavaScript or HTML. How many apps are built solely with those technologies?
Guggs: ?��A lot of apps are mixes.��
Q: ?What are companies deploying on Microsoft��s cloud infrastructure?
Guggs:? A lot of deployments in the crowd generally are apps being moved to virtual machines online, which is different than developing cloud apps.
Amazon has done this hosting of virtual machines longer and has the lead, he noted.
��Our offering��s off to a great start.��
Q: Why is Microsoft��s platform more consistent for developers than Android?
Guggs: We have a set of requirements for PC developers, and stricter requirements for Windows Phone developers.
��Windows has enough ��guard rails�� that you get a decent amount of predictability.��
Q: How easy will it be to migrate apps across Windows phones, PCs and the Xbox?
Shewchuk:? In some apps Microsoft sees 80 percent of the code being re-used across the platforms. ��It��s a journey; we make forward progress on this.��
Q: Apple and Android have tremendous momentum and networking effects in their favor. How does Microsoft compete?
Guggs: Microsoft gets momentum from the hardware platform �C ��there��s 300 million PCs that are going to ship one way or the other.�� Microsoft is also ��bootstrapping�� development on the platform. It��s also working with phone carriers and partners like Nokia.
Q: ?Has Microsoft considered giving a bigger share of app revenue to developers?
Guggs: That��s possible but a better approach may be to continue working to get more apps in the store, merchandise them better and then promote them. ?��I actually think that��s more useful than giving back 5 percent or something else.��
Q: What��s the future of Windows RT �C it doesn��t seem to have a lot of momentum.
Guggs: ��There is momentum,�� and Microsoft will continue to invest in the RT version of Windows for mobile ARM processors as well as Intel hardware.? PC makers ��really want both chipsets.��
��I would say give it some time �C we��re invested in it, you��ll see some new designs��
Q: Where is money being made with Windows 8 apps?
Guggs: Monetization is similar to other platforms, with games making the most money.
Q: It��s hard to believe Windows Phone will get to critical mass. Can you be successful if you don��t have 15 or 20 percent share? What if you can��t?

Schumer took issue with that, although he wouldn t name a figure of his own.Then Schumer declared the whole dispute beside the point. Though it was a down year for reasons fluky and otherwise it's an experience unlike any other in the sporting world, basketball or not.

However, there were several players I picked up on after voluntarily subjecting myself to the egregious mistake-filled basketball reserved for the truly degenerate hoops junkie.

Most Impressive: 

Let's get this out of the way first: players like , the Morris twins, and even  are supposed to dominate these kinds of games. They are physically superior, and with a couple years of professional experience, are simply better players at this juncture of their careers.

With that being said, my favorite player was . Granted, I was fighting a food coma after a second helping of chicken finger and fries (necessary if only because there's nothing else worth eating) but his advanced footwork and ability to shoot from mid-range had me gushing about his role alongside one-sided players like  and . So often we quickly pinpoint weaknesses due to our own preconceived notions and it's easy to think Zeller is unathletic and simply a hustle player. However, he tested as one of the most athletic bigs and can also . He'll still need to bulk up as most rookies do but the talent level is there, and though the  might've , he has enough talent to justify the selection. He averaged  and 9.3 rebounds while shooting 53 percent in 32 minutes per game. Can you tell that I love him?

Choosing a guard was extremely tough given the affinity I have for players that can control the pace of the offense, with poise and calmness that seeps through all floor generals. Most comparisons that come through the  are inaccurate, wishful thinking and sometimes downright Skip Baylessian in its absurdity, but the  parallel is striking. He only shot  during the week but his 86.7 percent free-throw percentage and the lack of a pronounced hitch in his shot (like Rondo) tells us he can improve immensely in that area.

Least Impressive: 

I dislike this portion because I want all the players to succeed and oftentimes Summer League isn't the right place for players so used to a system and hours, weeks and months of practice to get to a certain point in their game. I couldn't include  (more of a system player) or  (showed flashes of stardom), but it became simultaneously frustrating to watch  play basketball while imagining what could be possible in Cleveland.

Sick of watching  win not one, but two championships after leaving Cleveland, Dan Gilbert appears to be pushing all his chips on the table in signing  and drafting offensive-minded  instead of injured Nerlens Noel. Let's not forget they drafted  over Jonas Valanciunas (lol) and then Waiters over  (thanks!) despite getting lucky in the lottery.

Don't get me wrong, Waiters has some of the worn-out phrases that people love to claim; "he can put the ball in the bucket" and "he's fearless and tough out there". There's no doubt he can score, but at what cost? The results of so many Cleveland possessions turned into a Waiters show left me losing count of the times he'd pound the ball relentlessly per possession. It's almost as if he enjoys the sound of his dribbling and shooting the way Dexter Morgan treasures his blood slides.

I'll direct you to the  but there's no reason to harp on the numbers if you watch him play for a few possessions. Waiters has the potential to become an electrifying offensive player but the question will remain how the  reign in his propensity to put on his own show.



Ultimately, we learned that the tournament format, it's AAU-style effects, and the product on the floor were subpar. As fans we are always attempting to fix things, complaining, trying to imagine an ideal that conforms to our thoughts of what makes the sport functions as its best. Some easy solutions for next season are shortening the number of games and days (not many want to or can afford to stay in Vegas for 12 days), switching the exhibition games to a points format like the Orlando Summer League and even some quirky resolutions like tossing in a dunk contest, three-point contest or letting the players choose their own teams.

It was my first year at Summer League and I got to meet a ton of great people, bloggers and writers, and ultimately getting me to think about how often this occurs in other sports, if at all. Oftentimes, these summer games are just a haven for managers, executives, writers and reporters to hang around, meet each other and make connections for the future. The other side of the basketball game can be just as important as the one going on around them and I was glad to make up a minute portion of it.

== Skyscrapers of Victoria Harbour ==

Dubbed the "vertical Wall Street" due to its overwhelming number of banking tenants, the International Commerce Centre (ICC) on the reclaimed land of West Kowloon is the tallest structure in the city - 490 metres above sea level and 118 storeys high.

Occupying the 2,500,000 sq ft of office space are prominent international banking giants and hedge funds, such as Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse. The ICC and the 415 metre high Two International Financial Centre (Two IFC) across the harbour - both owned by developer Sun Hung Kai Properties - are the tallest skyscrapers in the city.

Two IFC, in the Central business district, was built in 2003. The top 14 floors house the operations centre of one of Asia's most powerful central banks, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, which sparked controversy back in 2001 when it bought the offices for HK$4 billion. The money came from the massive reserves in its Exchange Fund, which had assets of nearly HK$2.8 trillion at the end of last year.

Rents at Two IFC are HK$120 to HK$130 per sq ft, according to Sun Hung Kai Properties, and HK$70 to HK$80 a sq ft at ICC.

But these big contributors to gross domestic product aren't necessarily welcomed by locals.

There are complaints the skyscrapers have blocked views, as well as the flow of air, and have created temperature hot spots.

When the government started reviewing outline zoning plans of various districts in 2007, its new building height restrictions were aimed at creating steps of rooftop levels to preserve views of the hills, skyline and water. "The change came too late," said Roy Tam Hoi-pong of conservation group Green Sense.

One structure approved before new height restrictions came into force on the Kowloon peninsula is a 63-storey complex of offices, shops and a hotel being built by New World Development.

"The view of Lion Rock behind Tsim Sha Tsui will be blocked in future from Wan Chai," Tam said.

The development will stand "awkwardly" in the middle of Tsim Sha Tsui, surrounded by shorter buildings, the campaigner added.

Meanwhile, The Wharf (Holdings) has in its possession approval for a plan to redevelop part of its Harbour City mall into a 96-storey tower - some 386.7 metres tall, just 100 metres shorter than the ICC next door. The approval dates back to 1999.

Even when the new height curbs apply, developers are still able to damage the cityscape, former Town Planning Board member Bernard Lim Wan-fung said. "For city planning, height is not the only consideration; a three-dimensional approach is needed when examining plans," Lim said.

He and Tam both expressed worries over a new trend for short but "fat" designs. Tam said his concerns stemmed from Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying's announcement in the policy address that the government would look into ways to increase plot ratios to provide more flats.

"Such an increase must be dealt with cautiously," Tam said. "Urban land intensity is already very high."

Fussy file types
You know a program is complex when a beginner’s guide has a section dedicated to getting files running. In Audacity’s case, the traditional File Open command works as you’d expect it to, but you may run into compatibility issues when you try to open a common file type such as AAC, M4A, or WMA. That’s because Audacity doesn’t include rights for some proprietary file formats. Audacity doesn’t include the ability to rip audio from CDs, either, so you’ll have to rip the CD to your computer using a third-party program―Windows Media Player includes CD ripping functionality, for example―and then edit the digital files. Be sure to  to a supported file format.
Making tracks
When you load a track, its waveform graph appears in the middle of the screen―and Audacity activates (left to right) the Pause, Play, Stop, Skip to End, Skip to Start, and Record buttons on the upper-left side of the window. Pressing Play will start the track from its beginning by default. Clicking a specific time on the graph and then pressing Play will start playback from that part of the track, instead. In the Audacity Transcription toolbar, the slider to the right of the secondary green Play button controls playback speed. Clicking and dragging the cursor between two points on the graph will cause Audacity to play only the selected section. Get comfortable with this, because highlighting particular sections of tracks plays a large role in editing and adding effects to audio files.
Basic Editing 101
Before you start tinkering with the nuts and bolts of an audio track, you’ll have to make sure it’s stopped and not playing. Not paused; completely stopped.
The Edit menu (and the Editing toolbar) contains base-level options like cutting, copying and pasting. Click Trim to remove everything except the selected section of the track. Choose Silence to replace the selected portion with―you guessed it―silence. Use Split to remove the selected portion, replace it with silence, and drop the selected portion into a new track of its own, which appears below the first track. Select Duplicate to copy (rather than remove) a highlighted section of audio and then drop it (as with Split) into a new track of its own.
The Effects menu is chock-full of options that augment or enhance the existing audio. You’ll have to play with them all to get a feel for the vast array of tools available, some of which have names that don’t describe their functions terribly well. Options such as Bass Boost, Echo, and Fade In are straightforward enough, but they have granular effects settings attached to them; Bass Boost, for example, lets you set specific frequency and decibel levels.
Labels help!
Be sure to back up your audio files before hacking them to bits in Audacity. If you’re performing complex edits in a project, the Label tool comes in handy, especially if your tinkering extends over multiple sessions. Finding the right recording settings
People frequently use Audacity to record podcasts or jam sessions, or to convert music from old cassette tapes and vinyl records into digital files. Recording audio from outside sources―such as a microphone, a guitar, a record player or a USB turntable―is fairly easy with Audacity, though fine-tuning the input sound may take some work.
Begin by plugging your input device into your computer (unless you’re recording with a computer’s internal microphone, of course). Audacity recognizes all kinds of inputs, including USB audio, standard mic-in, and the beefier line-in. That last tidbit is the secret sauce to recording old analog music sources, by the way; just connect your cassette or record player to your computer with a line-out cable.
The Device toolbar conceals powerful options for audio inputs.
Next, you’ll want to fiddle with the options in the options in the Device toolbar, which holds several buttons that turn into drop-down menus when clicked. If you’re on a Windows PC, leave the Audio Host option as MME unless you have a very specific reason to change it. The Output Device button affects how you hear the audio playback.
From the Input Device options, you’ll select the input you’re using, whether it be a USB turntable, a gaming headset, or a discrete microphone. If you connect your device when Audacity is already up and running, you may have to restart the program to make that device option appear. Internal microphones show up as ‘Integrated Microphone Array’. Finally, the Input Channels option lets you choose between stereo or mono recording.
AudacityIf you see straight lines instead of bumpy waveforms like these after clicking the big red Record button, your audio input device isn’t picking up any sound.
Before you start recording, click the microphone icon in the Audacity Meter toolbar―next to the bar that shows the sound output levels when you’re playing back a track―and make sound with your input device to confirm that the audio input is recording properly. If it is, the L/R bars above the microphone icon should start flickering in response to the sound. The Input Volume and Output Volume sliders in the Audacity Mixer toolbar let you fine-tune the volume of the sound that’s coming in and going out, respectively.
When everything’s good to go, click the big red Record button to get the action started! The Stop and Pause buttons do exactly what you’d expect. If you accidentally click Stop when you meant to click Pause, hold down the Shift key and click Record again to continue recording at the end of the existing track.
Saving your work
Don’t let all that hard work go to waste. Select File Save Project to save the project in a file format that only Audacity to read. Coombs read from a letter Manning will send to the president that read: I regret if my actions hurt anyone or harmed the United States. It was never my intent to hurt anyone. 

Manning said the disclosure was done out of a love for my country and a sense of duty to others. 

The White House said the request would be considered like any other application. However, a pardon seems unlikely. Manning s case was part of an unprecedented string of prosecutions brought by the U.S. government in a crackdown on security breaches. The Obama administration has charged seven people with leaking to the media; only three people were prosecuted under all previous presidents combined.

Coombs also will work in coming weeks on a separate process in which he can seek leniency from the local area commander, who under military law must review and could reduce Manning s convictions and sentence.

Manning, an Army intelligence analyst from Crescent, Okla., digitally copied and released Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield reports and State Department cables while working in 2010 in Iraq.
