== Russell Wilson hosts passing academy in Seattle ==

<html>Russell Wilson began the final leg of the Russell Wilson Passing Academy football camp for young players on Saturday at the University of Washington. About 300 campers formed a line early Saturday morning, many wearing Russell Wilson jerseys.
I ve covered a lot of these camps put on by college or professional athletes before, and I have to say that Wilson s was one of the smoothest run that I ve been to. As one parent said at the end of the day,[http://www.runnerforever.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=706016 Community Calendar_0], Would you expect any different from him? Wilson was heavily involved throughout the day, bouncing between each of the different stations and conducting the quarterback session with Warren Moon. How about that for a combo to learn from, even if only for 20 or 30 minutes?
I ll get into this more down the road, but it s amazing to me the way people react to Wilson. The simple act of getting their picture taken with him or getting his signature legitimately seemed to make some peoples days. I could be making too much of that, but that s the way it seemed to me, and I watched him sign and take a lot of pictures over the course of five hours or so.

In the first game, Bowling Green s Brandon Martin delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning to bring in his team s only runs as Hot Rods edged the Dragons 2-1.

Dayton finished the night at 6-8 in the second half while Bowling Green is now 9-5. As Microsoft opens its annual Worldwide Partner Conference this week, it s a good time to ask: How is Microsoft doing in its relationships with its 640,000 partners? And what role might the partners play as Microsoft transforms itself into a devices-and-services company?
I asked the CEOs of? two locally based companies for their perspectives.
Birger Steen is a former Microsof exec and current CEO of Renton-based Parallels, which offers virtualization and automation software.
Majdi Daher is CEO of Redmond-based Denali Advanced Integration, an IT services and solutions provider.
Both will have teams from their companies at this year s WPC, which opened Sunday and runs through Thursday in Houston. About 16,000 people, representing resellers, consultants, systems integrators, developers and others who have built businesses based on Microsoft platforms and services, are expected at this year s conference where they ll get updates on Microsoft s roadmaps for the year ahead, and have opportunities to network.

Steen says that in the last seven or so years that Parallels has been working closely with Microsoft, this year stands out for Microsoft having an unequivocally partner-centric and partner-friendly strategy,[http://wiki.milko.3mhz.net/spamwiki/index.php/%D0%9F%D0%BE%D1%82%D1%80%D0%B5%D0%B1%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%B5%D0%BB:Mkengefqyl#Morning_links-_UW.E2.80.99s_Keith_Price.2C_Bishop_Sankey_named_t Morning links- UW’s Keith Price, Bishop Sankey named t], especially regarding its cloud offerings.
In the past three years, as Microsoft has become dead serious about the cloud, Steen believes, its approach has been to go directly to customers with its cloud offerings rather than try to leverage its partners.
That s in line with other companies who also thought the emergence of the cloud, as a separate business model,[http://freesoftware.infodocs.eu/index.php?title=Utilisateur:Mmpxywvwlg#Dutch_Lions_continue_win_streak_0 Dutch Lions continue win streak 0], meant that they could serve customers directly and eliminate intermediatries, Steen says.
 I think it s taken a bit of time to realize that these intermediaries resellers, integraters, support (people) are the ones who make sense of IT for small businesses and end users, he said.
In the past year, Microsoft has focused more on making use of and sharing of the cloud with partner resources, Steen said.
Indeed, Parallels is unveiling today support for a Microsoft Azure Pack for Hosting Providers, which it developed in collaboration with Microsoft, as well as updates to several of its cloud service delivery offerings.
 In the years we ve worked with Microsoft at Parallels, we ve never seen such a consistent partner-friendly approach across all of Microsoft s businesses, Steen said.

On the other hand, Majdi Daher, CEO of Denali Advanced Integration, says there s been a lot of uncertainty and lack of clarity coming from Microsoft lately. In addition, he believes, there is not a consistent strategy to go to partners and say: Let s drive value with partners and our portfolio. 
For instance, Microsoft earlier this month launched a program that allows business buyers to purchase Surface tablets and commercial services through authorized resellers. But the companies named by Microsoft as the initial group of resellers are all large-account resellers, not value-added resellers such as Denali that add their own services or solutions to Microsoft s offerings.
 I m disappointed, Daher said.
Letting the large resellers sell Surface is a good first step in opening up the various channels from which businesses can buy Surface,[http://sociallearnlab.org/sixiu/index.php?title=%E7%94%A8%E6%88%B7:Mevcsqigon#With_tinkering.2C_3D_printing_can_push_limits_1 With tinkering, 3D printing can push limits 1], Daher said. (It was previously only sold through Microsoft retail or online stores or through big-box stores such as Best Buy or Staples.)
But that s too little an effort, Daher said. It needs to be opened up, with a clearly defined program that invites partners who want to engage. 
Microsoft said the program is only in its first phase and that the company plans to sign up more resellers in more countries in the coming months.
For Daher, it all points to a larger issue of lack of clarity in what Microsoft tells its partners about how to qualify to sell certain Microsoft products.
Microsoft is pretty clear on some things,[http://taoc.dk/wiki/index.php/Bruger:Moczsakzal#Dutch_Lady_Lions_playing_well_0 Dutch Lady Lions playing well 0], including making sure engineers in companies such as Denali understand products such as Windows Azure or System Center, he said.
But Microsoft is unclear on others,? including what resellers need to do in order to be able to resell mobile devices such as Windows Phone, Windows RT tablets, and the Surface Pro and Surface RT tablets, Daher believes.
 It is concerning to us to see a great product like Windows 8 not making the headway that it should be making, he said. I really believe the reason it s not getting the traction it should is because Microsoft did not go to partners like us and say: Let s figure out how to deliver the Windows 8 experience to your customers. Microsoft has been trying to do that all on its own. 
It s a lost opportunity for Microsoft since it s the value-added resellers who advise their business customers on which operating system to use, whether it s Windows 8, Windows? RT, iOS or Android, Daher said.
But, he added, I think Microsoft will eventually get it right.</html>

== Analysts question Microsoft app plans, silent on re ==

<html>SAN FRANCISCO _ Nobody mentioned the elephants in the room at Microsoft s subdued meeting with financial analysts today.
Perhaps the 30 or so analysts didn t want to rock the boat now that Microsoft stock has finally perked back up, rising 26 percent so far this year.
But during the analyst meeting held during its Build developer conference, nobody brought up  who may be hoping to shake-up Microsoft s board of directors and perhaps spin off the Bing or Xbox groups.
Nor did anyone mention  of the company s leadership, which could lead to changes in how the company reports earnings for different business units.
Instead, analysts peppered Steven Guggs Guggenheimer, vice president of the company s developer and evangelism group, with questions mostly?about how the company can attract more developers and better compete against Apple and Google on mobile devices.
After a somewhat cool initial reception, Windows 8 is warming up with developers, Guggenheimer told the analysts. He said they ve?gone from lean back to lean in conversation about developing apps for Microsoft s platform.
 Right now it��s a lean-in conversation, he said. The conversation��s gone from if to when and in some cases how.��
Microsoft s?annual financial analyst meeting referred to as FAM used to be a gala event on?the Redmond?campus that ended with cocktails and analysts crowding around Ballmer, Bill Gates and other top executives. In recent years it morphed into low-key receptions held concurrent with big Microsoft conference.
This year, FAM?was an unpublicized,?hour-long session in a windowless room in the basement of Moscone Center, with Guggenheimer sitting akimbo on stage with his lieutenant, Microsoft Technical Fellow John Shewchuk.
Here s a heavily edited selection from the exchange:

Q: Apple��s iOS and Google��s Android have huge momentum. What strengths does Microsoft have and how is it advancing?
Guggs: Microsoft addresses this question with app developers in several ways.
��People care about the number of devices,[http://weedpedia.org/index.php?title=Usu%C3%A1rio:Mlngctdryz#Morning_links-_UW.E2.80.99s_Keith_Price.2C_Bishop_Sankey_named_t Morning links- UW’s Keith Price, Bishop Sankey named t], or have confidence you��re going to be shipping more devices �� hundreds of millions of PCs will ship this year and sometimes we lose track of that,�� he said.
Microsoft also pitches its ��common core.�� Windows Phones and PCs have a common core that makes it easier to develop apps for both platforms ��it��s not exactly the same �� but you have a good starting point,�� he said.
The platform is richer, with common user experiences on phones, tablets and PCs; a variety of interfaces and Windows 8 features such as the ��charm�� controls for search and sharing.
Apple��s iOS ��doesn��t bridge experience across phone, tablet and their PC �C Android doesn��t really have a PC,�� he said.
Microsoft also offers more flexibility in its commerce platform,[http://wiki.comunidadhuayra.org/Usuario:Mznfzqpeob#Indiana_couple_has_moved_to_Xenia_because_of_quality.2C_proxim Indiana couple has moved to Xenia because of quality, proxim], with a sliding scale for sharing app store revenue, for instance, and improvements in app store merchandising that were highlighted during the morning keynote.
Q: What is Microsoft doing to encourage enterprises to build business apps? Is it taking advantage of its strength in enterprise computing?
Guggs: Big companies don��t necessarily want to turn their internal programs into apps.
��Very few companies who have a decent amount of code or apps �C they don��t want to throw it out and replace it,�� he said.
Microsoft is offering them ways to develop programs that run online in the cloud, or span internal and cloud infrastructure or move back and forth, he noted.
The company is now ��tuning�� its enterprise sales to press harder on services and apps,[http://hoku-ei.sakura.ne.jp/wiki/%E5%88%A9%E7%94%A8%E8%80%85:Mafrnmdplt#Reign_FC_beats_Western_New_York_Flash.2C_extends_unbeaten_stre Reign FC beats Western New York Flash, extends unbeaten stre], in addition to traditional business products.

Q: What incentive is there for developers to write for new Windows 8 interface, when they have apps that work in old interface?
Guggs: ��That new UI is a great user experience, especially with touch �� To be fair, it goes app by and app and it depends on what they��re trying to do.��
Still, Windows 8 is far off for many big companies that are still moving to Windows 7.
��The number one conversation we have today truthfully is, if you have a lot of XP apps, let��s get them to 7 apps,[http://www.katzen-lexikon.de/Benutzer:Mdeeunajla#Heading_to_the_islands-_Pick_up_some_farm Heading to the islands- Pick up some farm],�� he said. ��We sort of have that ��let��s get to the right point�� conversation.��
Q: ?Windows 8 enables developers to write apps in JavaScript or HTML. How many apps are built solely with those technologies?
Guggs: ?��A lot of apps are mixes.��
Q: ?What are companies deploying on Microsoft��s cloud infrastructure?
Guggs:? A lot of deployments in the crowd generally are apps being moved to virtual machines online, which is different than developing cloud apps.
Amazon has done this hosting of virtual machines longer and has the lead, he noted.
��Our offering��s off to a great start.��
Q: Why is Microsoft��s platform more consistent for developers than Android?
Guggs: We have a set of requirements for PC developers, and stricter requirements for Windows Phone developers.
��Windows has enough ��guard rails�� that you get a decent amount of predictability.��
Q: How easy will it be to migrate apps across Windows phones, PCs and the Xbox?
Shewchuk:? In some apps Microsoft sees 80 percent of the code being re-used across the platforms. ��It��s a journey; we make forward progress on this.��
Q: Apple and Android have tremendous momentum and networking effects in their favor. How does Microsoft compete?
Guggs: Microsoft gets momentum from the hardware platform �C ��there��s 300 million PCs that are going to ship one way or the other.�� Microsoft is also ��bootstrapping�� development on the platform. It��s also working with phone carriers and partners like Nokia.
Q: ?Has Microsoft considered giving a bigger share of app revenue to developers?
Guggs: That��s possible but a better approach may be to continue working to get more apps in the store, merchandise them better and then promote them. ?��I actually think that��s more useful than giving back 5 percent or something else.��
Q: What��s the future of Windows RT �C it doesn��t seem to have a lot of momentum.
Guggs: ��There is momentum,�� and Microsoft will continue to invest in the RT version of Windows for mobile ARM processors as well as Intel hardware.? PC makers ��really want both chipsets.��
��I would say give it some time �C we��re invested in it, you��ll see some new designs��
Q: Where is money being made with Windows 8 apps?
Guggs: Monetization is similar to other platforms, with games making the most money.
Q: It��s hard to believe Windows Phone will get to critical mass. Can you be successful if you don��t have 15 or 20 percent share? What if you can��t?
