He s shown that he has all the talent in the world (his 2010 season backs that up),[http://jenerick.com.ph/ 2013 composite NFL preseason schedule for Capital Region], but all of his talent has been lost in the shadows of injuries.
Serious ones.
After his stellar rookie year when he averaged nearly 19 yards a catch and scored a combined seven touchdowns between receiving, rushing and special teams, Ford was looked upon as a legitimate playmaker in Oakland.
He did everything.
Since that fantastic season, however, Ford has only played in eight games out of a possible 32.
The unpredictable and what has become the all-too-common Lisfranc injury has severely dampened Ford s ability to stay on the field. He didn t even play a down in 2012.
Now, the are in serious rebuilding mode,[http://web89757.se.honhei.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1088941 Best Case-Worst Case- 2013 NFL Season Preview for the Minnesota Vikings], and they need Ford more than ever. He another injury in training camp over the weekend and even though several players get injured in training camp trying to shake off the rust of the offseason, Ford s should always be looked upon carefully.
It s just something you have to do with a guy who s been consistently ravaged with bad injuries. Not to mention one who possesses incredible talent.
Just like extremely talented and injury-prone running back [http://www.jerseys-hearts.com/Darren-McFadden-18262/ Darren McFadden], Ford is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The good thing for Ford is that despite his injured past,[http://blog.beetlebum.de/2013/08/06/zuruck-mit-liebeskummer/#comments NFL training camp roundup- Broncos lose C Koppen for season], he s not going to make nearly as much as McFadden,[http://wudangzazhi.wushuw.com/home.php?mod=space&uid=36211 ], so the Raiders would be more inclined to keep him from a financial standpoint.
He s only this season, and the Raiders are hoping he will be worth a contract extension. His talents are insurmountable, but his health just isn t. Oakland is looking to build for the future as shown by the massive overhaul by general manager Reggie McKenzie,[http://wudangzazhi.wushuw.com/home.php?mod=space&uid=36211 ], and it wants Ford to be a part of it.
With a bunch of young, talented (but unproven) guys on the offense, the Raiders need Ford to be out there. For their sake (and his), the Raiders need him to play all 16 games like he did in 2010, which seems like so long ago because injuries have put his talents on the backburner.
They need him to electrify their spirits with his unmistakable speed and play-making abilities. The only question is: How long are they willing to wait?
Steven Slivka is a freelance writer for the .
