The three-time defending Formula One champion surged ahead in his Red Bull by the first curve and then had to resist the challenge of two fast Lotus cars. He took the checkered flag a second ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, who is being mentioned as Vettel's possible future colleague.
 It was a tough race. It was one of the toughest for a long time, Vettel said after his fourth victory of the season. Vettel's 30th career victory extended his championship lead to 34 points over Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso, who finished fourth. Raikkonen went for his third and final pit stop with 10 laps remaining and overtook Grosjean five laps later, on team orders.
 Maybe we should have gambled, the tires were good, Raikkonen said about his late pit stop. I wonder if we should have gone to the end.
 But I had massive problem with the radio. I could hear the team but they couldn't hear me. 
Raikkonen and Vettel are friends off and on the track but were noncommittal when asked Sunday about driving for the same team.
 He is quite good at what he does. I respect him a lot but at the end it's not my decision, Vettel said.
Vettel and Red Bull teammate Mark Webber, who is leaving the team at the end of the season, got off to a flying start.
Vettel started second behind pole sitter Lewis Hamilton, with Webber right behind. Both flashed by the Mercedes driver on either side before the first curve.
But Webber lost his rear right wheel when he was released from his first pit stop too soon and finished seventh after dropping to the back of the field after the incident. The flying wheel struck British cameraman Paul Allen. He remained conscious and was treated at the circuit before being taken to a nearby hospital.

Hamilton struggled with his tires and finished fifth as Mercedes again failed to live up to the promise of its fast qualifying performance.
While the tires held and made the threat of a drivers' boycott redundant, another scary incident took place when Jules Bianchi's Marussia spewed smoke and caught fire briefly. Bianchi got out of the car, which started freewheeling down the track on its own. There were no other cars coming as the driverless vehicle ended up on the grass, hit a trackside billboard and came to a halt as stewards rushed to control it.
That brought on the safety car for five laps, bringing the Lotus cars nearer to Vettel. But despite coming close, neither managed to get past the German.
The tires became an issue after a series of blowouts at last week's British Grand Prix, prompting drivers to threaten a pullout if the problems persisted in Germany.

 Build-out of a large-scale mine near the headwaters of a world-class salmon fishery in Alaska could wipe out as many as 90 miles of streams and alter stream flows, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in a revised assessment released April 26.
 The report said mining activity would claim at least 24 miles of streams in the Bristol Bay region, based on the scenarios evaluated, with the loss of wetlands ranging from 1,200 to 4,800 acres.
 The EPA focused on the Pebble deposit and took into account information related to the proposed Pebble Mine but also noted the potential for multiple mines in the region, given the resource base,[http://huzhenglan.gotoip4.com/plus/view.php?aid=16612 NY woman gets probation in illegal maid case], which it said would lead to further elimination or blocking of streams and wetland losses.
 EPA initiated the review process in response to concerns raised by tribes and others about the impact large-scale mining could have on Bristol Bay fisheries.
 Critics of the EPA review including the Pebble Limited Partnership, the group behind the proposed Pebble Mine fear it could lead to the agency vetoing mining activity in the region.
 Pebble Partnership CEO John Shively said the review was unnecessary, flawed and consistent with the demands of those who want to deny the Pebble Partnership the right to submit a permit application. 
 The Alaska Department of Law also issued a statement.
 We believe the assessment is premature, as well as any action EPA might take based upon it, the state agency said. Any consideration of impacts should be made within the context of an actual proposal and a Clean Water Act Section 404 permit application. 
 The Pebble Partnership has called the mine deposit one of the largest of its kind in the world, with the potential of producing 80.6 billion pounds of copper, 107.4 million ounces of gold and 5.6 billion pounds of molybdenum over decades.
 EPA regional administrator Dennis McLerran said the revised report generally affirms conclusions reached in the initial report last year while including more details on transportation corridors, possible culvert failures and other factors.
 It noted, for example, that culvert blockages or other failures would inhibit fish passage. It also said production of fish could be lost or diminished if blockages occurred during adult salmon immigration or juvenile salmon emigration and were not cleared for several days.
 Extended blockages aren t likely during mine operations, but there could be a greater impact once mine operations end, the report states.
 The report also noted that salmon could be affected by in-stream copper levels because leaching could occur during routine mine operations.
 Tailing storage facilities and dams to hold mine waste are likely to be in place for hundreds to thousands of years because there is no plan for removal when mining operations end, according to the report.  Conservationists said it was clear the mine would harm salmon and destroy streams, even if nothing ever goes wrong.
 Pebble is far bigger and more threatening to renewable resource jobs than any other mine proposal in Alaska and it s planned for the worst location possible, Tim Bristol, director of Trout Unlimited s Alaska program, said in a news release.
 The new report updates an assessment EPA released last year and is meant to address concerns that were raised about things like missing data and incomplete information.

 EPA said the scenarios realistically represent the type of development expected to happen in the Bristol Bay region. McLerran said it also accounts for modern mining practices. He said the focus has been on getting the science right so informed decisions can be made in the future.

De Ann Letourneau was at The Smith Center in plenty of time before the 7:30 p.m. show. That was not the problem. What the audience didn’t realize is at that moment, Letourneau was running in high heels (too hot to take them off, she explained) across The Smith Center complex from the grassy Symphony Park stage to the Reynolds Hall dressing room. A security guard rushed up to her while talking into a headpiece, saying, “I’ve got her!” and led her into the venue’s side entrance.
After a quick change into a white top and black slacks, and carrying a water bottle under her arm, Letourneau strode to the stage maybe 10 minutes late. Matt Catingub led the symphony’s pops presentation, a show steeped in patriotic songs fitting for the holiday and even a medley of TV sitcom theme songs (“All in the Family” linked to “The Love Boat” followed by “The Brady Bunch,” like that).
Catingub is a vastly talented, uber-versatile music director who can sing (he shared the stage with Clint Holmes and Kristen Hertzenberg on Thursday and fearlessly sang with both great vocalists),[http://220.196.42.111/wiki/index.php/%E7%94%A8%E6%88%B7:Kimberlyroch Confusion on Snowden acceptance of Venezuela offer], write charts and play the sax and other horns in the woodwinds family. He toured with Rosemary Clooney and has arranged and composed for an array of artists, including Boz Scaggs, Kenny Loggins, Diana Krall, James Ingram, Toni Tennille, The Righteous Brothers and Toto. As the son of Frank Sinatra protégé Mavis Rivers and a Vegas resident, Catingub is an ideal figure to lead the Phil’s pops shows. He’s back in April for a Vegas-styled, standards-driven pops show.
L.V. Phil officials, who plan to fill its open music-director position by next May, also are figuring out how to grow the symphony’s five-concert pops series to give Catingub more chances to lead the orchestra. He’s a magnanimous conductor. His enthusiastic sing-along to such songs as the theme from “Happy Days” tickled the holiday crowd. More Matt, we say. He’s fabuloso.</html>

The obvious political analysis here is correct: On the whole, conservative Catholics will cheer swift sainthood for John Paul while progressive Catholics will welcome the news that an overly long process of elevating John to the same status had reached its culmination. One for one side, one for the other ― it’s a good formula for harmony, something Catholicism needs right now. But much more is going on here. Rapid sainthood for John Paul was inevitable, partly because of widespread devotion to him around the church and not simply in its conservative wing. A campaign to sanctify him took off from the moment of his death. Whatever criticisms might be directed his way ― on his sluggishness in facing up to the clerical abuse scandal, for example ― there should be no denying his standing as a world-historical figure. His vital role in the collapse of Soviet communism will always be recognized as the product of faith married to shrewd statesmanship. And, speaking personally, getting to cover John Paul’s 1986 visit to a synagogue in Rome where he robustly and decisively condemned anti-Semitism will always endure as one of the most moving experiences of my journalistic life. But that story is a perfect example of why it was essential to sanctify popes John and John Paul at the same time. Without Pope John, there would not have been the John Paul we came to admire. I should acknowledge my interest here since I argued two years ago for just this result. Elevating both popes was the only way to make clear that the sweeping reforms of the Second Vatican Council, called by Pope John, opened the way for John Paul’s greatest achievements. These were, in large part, liberal triumphs involving a commitment to human rights, religious liberty and democracy as well as a stern opposition to religious prejudice and an emphasis on social justice and workers’ rights. Yet except among the ranks of scholars and older progressive Catholics, Vatican II is so often a dim memory. There will be questions in both cases about Pope Francis’ flexibility with the church’s requirement that two miracles be attributed to saints. But as retired Newsweek writer Ken Woodward noted in his definitive 1990 book “Making Saints,” the church’s process of honoring holy people has always been, shall we say, complex, and not without considerations that might be seen as political.
