The round-trip fare for a standard car and driver riding on Washington State Ferries to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands would top the ouch-worthy $60 mark by next summer under proposed fare increases. But a family of four including two teenagers would pay a little less than they re paying this summer for that same trip.
The fare break for families is part of a special provision in the fare package now being aired in a by the Washington State Transportation Commission.
The plan calls for a 2-percent passenger rate increase and 3-percent vehicle fare increase in October, followed by another 2-percent passenger increase and 2.5-percent vehicle increase next May. The proposal is intended to provide more affordable travel options for families, according to the Transportation Commission s website. Kids younger than 6 will continue to ride for free and adults 65 and older will continue to get half off.
So while that family of four pays $89.80 to get to Friday Harbor this summer, the fare would total $86.80 next summer under the new proposal. (The math: Current fares are $57.35 for standard car and driver; $12.45 for full-fare passenger; $10 each for two youth fares. == Lake Washington sockeye count still climbing, but no movemen ==

The Lake Washington sockeye continue to stream up The Ballard Locks fish ladder, and there is still no movement on a decision about lowering the spawning escapement goal or any possible fisheries.
“There are no plans on a policy engagement for this week for (Lake Washington) sockeye,” said Pat Pattillo, the state Fish and Wildlife salmon policy coordinator.
While there is no new news on sockeye that doesn’t mean it could change at a moments notice as state Fish and Wildlife has put a priority right now on trying to figure out the Puyallup and Skokomish river situation.
Both rivers currently don’t have any sport seasons planned this summer despite good numbers of salmon returning to both. The state and tribes are in negotiations on the issue.
In the meantime, the updated run size for Lake Washington sockeye has not climbed to 160,197 sockeye through Sunday, July 14, and has now fallen close to 35,000 fish behind the 2006 run during this same time frame, which was the last time a sport fishery was held in the large urban watershed. The preseason forecast this summer was 96,866.
The peak return time is usually between July 4 and July 12.
Last summer’s return of 145,815 shattered the preseason forecast of 45,871, and more than 20-million fry were released into the lake earlier this spring.
State Fish and Wildlife met Thursday (July 11) via a conference call with Muckleshoot, Suquamish and Tulalip tribal fisheries managers to review the Lake Washington sockeye run.
The next step is to discuss the sockeye situation very soon with state Fish and Wildlife director Phil Anderson or someone else who could be temporarily stepping in for him.
That person will be briefed on the technical group’s new management objective, which calls for an escapement spawning goal as low as 200,000. The current spawning escapement goal is 350,000, which has been in place at least three or four decades.
Concerns at this point are the sockeye returns appear to be declining, and looks like it peaked a week ago, but that could still climb or continue in a downward trend. Others discussed the warm water once the sockeye cross over the Locks, and into the thermal barrier between Lake Union and Lake Washington that creates a dire situation for fish.
Once they’re briefed and the tribal managers also meet, then another co-manager discussion will likely occur.
If a reduction is eventually approved, and if the run continues to move toward and above that 200,[http://oliwer.net/b/2008/05/i-just-finished-installing-mov.html#comments Jim Hightower's Common Sense_3],000, then a really small fishery could still be possible. State managers call this a step harvest rate approach.
The question is whether this new policy would be agreed for three or four years, and be a test drive to the change in management as well as working out sticky topics like mitigation and hatchery issues.
The earliest time frame to have a possible fishery would be later this month, and it is likely fisheries managers will not make any decisions for at least a week or longer.
Based on the latest numbers ― adjusted for tribal C S fisheries below the locks ― the final run will end up between 175,000 and 225,000.

The last time Lake Washington was open for sport sockeye fishing in 2006 anglers has 18 days to fish on the water with a return of 458,005 fish, the longest since 1996 when it was open 25 days. Other dates a fishery was held included 2004, 2002, 2000 and 1996.</html>
