An 86-year-old graphic designer recently filed case against Volkswagon saying he is the designer of the initial, nearly 60-year-old VW logo. Nikolai Borg doesnt want financial compensation. He's suing Volkswagon for not knowing his hand-in the design. I simply wish to live to see my work accepted. I will not be satisfied with such a thing less than traditional approval. Borg promises a Nazi commissioned him to design the now world famous brand prior to WW II. After being told the task was on hold, he was surprised to see his individual design appear on military vehicles many years later. He has been looking to get recognition since. Credit-taking within the graphic-design world is saturated in gray place. A company might hire an artist ahead up with a, and then hire a different company to revise their logo a few years later. The changes in design might be small, and could even go unnoticed by most of the people. But who has the credit for picking out the style? Which developers have the right to record them because the designer of the particular look? Certainly the original designer deserves credit for discovering a solid design, but doesnt a future designer deserve credit for strengthening a design, particularly if the emblem the organization uses is a of the work of an additional or even next designer? For all we know, Mr. Borg submitted a great style, that was then modified, perhaps even many times, and then brought in-to use. And what about companies that employ a designer in the future up with logo concepts, then just take those concepts and have an designer work with them until they have the logo they were trying to find all along? This is simply not illegal, because the company basically buys the ideas from the artist. The organization can do whatever they desire with them once that transaction is complete.
