With the education budget cuts during the past decade and a renewed focus on reading and mathematics, the arts have experienced several cutbacks and even programs eliminated. The new government requirements do not leave any moment or money to underwrite the programs needed, though educators notice that the arts is an essential matter for graduating well-rounded pupils. Hence, students wishing for a vocation in the arts will be the ones now left behind, until their parents recognize their childrens expertise and can manage to send them to private schools. Moreover, students with latent artist talents may never understand these skills, since they will not are able to see the arts first-hand in the college environment. Within the Ohio colleges, some students are being offered a helping hand. Every June for just one month, a number of Ohio schools secondary students receive the opportunity to apprentice with an expert artist, really working on a project. This program is called Arts LIFT (Lola Isroff Fund for Teens). The Ohio schools kids are selected in the Akron large schools and spend three days at the Cuyahog Valley Environmental Education Center to get a retreat. Then, they work under the direction and tutelage of the professional artist. This season, five Ohio schools teens will soon be apprenticed under Akron artist and professional ceramist Beth Lindenberger. After their three-day retreat, the Ohio schools teenagers will create large-scale, permanent ceramic sculptures at the University of Akrons Myers School of Art. The art will be mounted at environmentally Friendly Education Center at the end of June. A public reception follows in July in the Art School. Throughout the Ohio schools teenagers beginner period, displays of artworks from their personal portfolios will be shown at the Art School in the Emily David Gallery, Folk Hall. Each student receives a stipend for his or her participation. Arts LIFT won a Collaborative Project Award from the Akron Location Arts Alliance in 2005. The program was designed and is directed by Elisa Gargarells, a of Akron art knowledge assistant teacher. The purpose of the program is to provide students to Ohio schools in Akron an opportunity to assist and see professional artists in the context of using their skills for hire in actuality. This program also attempts to connect Ohio schools students with institutions that deal with efficiency and environmental problems, as well as real environmental efforts. The desired outcome is for Ohio schools students to see that their creative abilities are marketable as a lifetime career, along with being able to help the environment and community. Past Ohio schools students in the system have created: Big holding, stained glass butterflies for your Corbin Conservatory at Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens in 2004; About 40 ceramic statues for that Crown Point Ecology Centers perennial garden in 2003; and An animal habitat-themed mural for that Akron Zoos academic outreach vehicle in 2002. Some students in Akron are getting the support they require and deserve, although cuts and academic refocusing have seriously hurt the arts program in the Ohio colleges.
