Despite a massive assault by its critics, Engines of Creation is a truly revolutionary work, and Eric Drexler should be praised for launching an international discussion about the matter of molecular manufacturing (MM), or molecular nanotechnology (MNT), as some refer to it. First of all, this is a book that has to be updated, as the opening chapters deal in-depth with protein design and a later chapter attempts to paint a picture of another network of information known as 'the Net.' However the remainder of the book is classic. Visit [http://www.iplasticsupply.com/materials/pvc-poly-vinyl-chloride-sheet-rod pvc sheet] to check up the purpose of it. (Update: Since this review, Engines of Creation is updated and changed by Engines of Creation 2.0) The actual worth of Engines of Creation comes not from the argument of whether or not treatment of individual compounds is achievable. We know that it is. Our bodies are full of nature's own molecular devices. But the true worth of this book is due to its assumption that such technology will turn into a global organization and will have great implications for the human experience. The significance of the study and evaluation of those effects cannot be overstated, and the Foresight Institute was formed by Drexler in a attempt to deal with a number of these problems. (Even though personally, I recommend The Middle for Responsible Nanotechnology while the most useful 'think-tank' on molecular manufacturing's benefits and dangers). The energy to thoroughly and inexpensively control the structure of matter will influence every part of the individual experience, and even though it is a worthy try to speculate on the implications for medicine, room pursuit, stopping poverty, etc., none of these benefits will be understood if we fail to workout an acceptable system of governance once molecular production becomes reality. The growth of the technology will cause the development of new weapons of destructive power, possibly give rise to demagogues, and provide the conditions required to precipitate an unsafe, and possibly world-threatening, arms race between competing MM-enabled nation states. It remains uncertain as to if exactly the same principles of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) can still apply, though we've encountered these issues because the dawn of the Nuclear Age. Engines of Creation sparks the discussion how we will handle the new issues that arise from man's ability to manipulate molecules, and in doing so, it offers an invaluable service to the people. Because molecular manufacturing can determine our future, those worried about our future and the entire world by which we live must study this book.
