team During this time Mr Covey and his have won eight state indoor championships and seven outdoor championships Even more significant is the fact that Ames High has only lost two Central Iowa Conference Championships since Mr Covey came to Ames High The most outstanding fact however is that Coveys trackmen have only lost one district meet since 1945 In 1961 Tech of Des Moines edged out Ames and gave them their first district loss Before coming to Ames High Mr Covey coached five years of track at Odebolt and five years at Cherokee During his coaching career many outstanding athletes have developed from his tire less and sacrificial coaching Certainly not many coaches have given so much time and effort to their profession as has Mr Covey Among the many Ames High trackmen who have gone on to make good their track ability are Cliff Cushman Olympic hurt ler Fred Errington Bob Covey state champion Jack Stevens vaulter John Murray vaulter John Wilkins former ISU track coach and Dave Chipman ISUs number one vaulter This is only a small number of the many boys who have made good after graduating from Mr Coveys coaching Coveys track squad won their state indoor championships in 46 55 57 58 59 62 63 and 64 State outdoor champion ships were in 49 55 56 57 58 60 and 63 With such an outstanding coach and an undefeated track team it is hoped the students and loyal Ames fans will
