My grandmother did many oil paintings before she died. They are wonderful, but only important to our family. My mother, huge smoker, put a small oil painting (about 1-2 x 18) in her small studio apartment for quite some time. This week she is going, and gave the painting to me. It's difficult and drippy with smoke residue. My local memorial needs nearly $200 to clean it! Can there be a home-remedy that I.. Certainly one of my loyal readers was seeking guidance washing a gas painting: Before she died my grandmother did several oil paintings. They are lovely, but only valuable to the family. My mother, a heavy smoker, hung a small oil painting (about 12 x 18) in her small studio apartment for many years. This week she is going, and gave the painting to me. It's difficult and drippy with smoke residue. My local art gallery wants very nearly $200 to wash it! Can there be a home-remedy that I could test? Certainly, I dont want to hurt it, but its not really a valuable piece, and I just want it washed enough to hang in my own kitchen (still life with good fresh fruit) and wine. Thanks for any advice you can provide! I cant make any guarantees (since Im not really a curator) regarding the security of those options for your particular painting. But I could tell you what I do to clean the paintings I own. 1.The safest solution, but won't focus on places is by using a very soft brush to-remove dirt and smoke particles (very soft paintbrush, child brush, shaving brush, that sort of thing). You can purchase a micro connection set for your machine that has small brushes (under an inch in length) for greater cleanup (dont scrub the outer lining with all the bristles, thoughjust light, round passes). If that doesnt work, you should use a dry rubber sponge in short strokes throughout the surface, but only if the surface isnt destroyed or flaky. It sees every last little bit of dust and soot, but likely will not work with the truly sticky parts. 2.The other solution is to utilize soft, clean towels and water with a few drops of dish soap. Do-so, If you're able to take away the frame to test this quietly or edge of the painting first. Watch the top of the painting and always check when the paint colors are lifting off clearly, and the towels to see whats coming off, stop washing. Decide to try only moist cloths at first, pat the painting, no cleaning. Be mindful not to expand the canvas by pushing too hard, if she painted on canvas. If wet cloths arent working, make use of a bit more water, only beware that water can run under varnish, if there is any, and that if the paint is thin, and the canvas or board gets damp, it can shrink or warp and cause cracks in-the paint. Ive washed my own paintings in this manner, but a conservator could move my neck if I ever tried it in a gallery! Ive also used alcohol o-n a cotton ball for really bad areasscary, however it works. Use a tiny number of alcohol. It might be worth it to ask around at the gallery to see if there is a conservators apprentice or helper working there, if these procedures don't work. Ask around unofficially by checking using the security guards, reception staff, gallery store clerks, an such like. She or he might be prepared to examine your painting to recommend a solvent or clean it to get a cheap (under-the dining table o-n his/her own time). You might like to examine antique and mounting stores to see if they have lower costs for cleaning services. Best of luck cleaning your oil painting!
